DIY: CF Center Console Overlay
This is copied over from the following thread, it has pics of the finished product.
CF Center Console
So I don't have pics of in progress, but I will post what I did and if anyone else does this you guys should be able to see what I am talking about as you do yours.
1. Removing the center console.
2. Separating the silver pieces.
On to the important parts![Smilie](https://www.rx8club.com/images/smilies/smile.gif)
3. Preparing the overlay. This applies to all 4 sections
4. The front driver side.
5. Front passenger side.
6. The back pieces.
Use the same procedure as the front. You may need to cut slits on the ends so that it overlaps itself slightly due to the curve of the piece, but you will figure it out from doing the front pieces.
Trim any extra off after you bend the top over. You will want to cover any part of plastic that bends from the front to back side even if you have to patch it. I missed a couple spots and didn't realize it until I had it installed. soe when you flip open the back cup holders, if you are really looking you can notice the silver.
Reinstall the plastic pieces to the console, and put the console back into the car using the reverse directions above.

1. Removing the center console.
- Remove the shift ****.
- Remove the panel with the shift boot.
- Remove the ashtray assembly.
- Remove the center pass through to the trunk.
- Remove the felt from the two storage areas in the console.
- Remove the screws holding down the center console: 2 under the radio where the ashtray assembly should be, 2 on the silver part behind the shifter, 1 on the front most part of the cup holder section, 1(or 2) in the foward storage compartment, 2 in the rear storage compartment, 2 on the top-back of the console, where the pass-through sits.
- Use a screwdriver to lift up and pull out aux power outlet in the foward storage. You can unclip the plug from the back and set it aside.
- Lift up the console right behind the split in the middle of the silver parts. There are two clips that hold the front part of the rear section down, this is how to pop them out.
- Once the clips are out, lift the back half of the console from the side closest to the trunk up and out of the car.
- Lift up the front half of the console from the back, and pull towards the back of the car. Two black pieces of trim under the radio will come with it. Remove the whole section from the car. (You may have to fight a little around the parking brake, but it will come out.)
2. Separating the silver pieces.
- Front Half: Remove the two black pieces of trim. There are 2 screws on the back of each.
- Back Half: The two sides are separate. I did one at a time, but you can do it how you want. There are 5 screws for each side. The center screws may be covered by insulation.

3. Preparing the overlay. This applies to all 4 sections
- Unroll the overlay to the length of the piece you are going to cover and cut to that length (leave about a half an inch extra on each side).
- Cut the overlay off-center down the length of it leaving roughly a 4" strip and a 2" strip. You will use the 4" strip.
4. The front driver side.
- Start at the back of the piece. Peel part of the backing from the overlay and put the overlay on the plastic. You want to have some extra over hanging the back and about a half inch on the top/bottom of the piece.
- Make sure it is even and peel the backing as you are pressing down the overlay onto the plastic. I used a little card type thing that came with the stuff, but a credit card will work great too. You want to use this as it will greatly help reduce bubbles. It may take a couple times of you peeling it off and reaiming so that it is straight all the way down the piece. On the last couple pieces I just took the backing off completely so I could get it right.
- Run the card over the entire from surface so that it is smooth.
- Now start with the bottom edge: Run your finger down the edge slowly so the overlay wraps over to the other side. Use the credit card on the other side so it is sealed.
- Now do the same on the top edge starting at the back. If you need to, trim off any overlay if there is too much extra. When you get close to the curve in the front, stop.
- For the curves, I cut slits in the overlay prependicular to the curve. This will prevent it from wrinkling as you fold it over.
- Fold down the rest of the top part, as you are going down the curve, fold down one little section at a time. When you fold down the next section, it will overlap slightly.
- Trim off the extra on the back side if there is too much.
5. Front passenger side.
- Attach the overlay in the same manner as the first side. Roll the bottom edge over also.
- For the top edge, you will need to cut some slits where the overlay will go over the bend for the brake handle. Trim it as best you can, but you will need patch it later anyways.
- Roll the whole top edge over, making the same slits for the front curve.
- Now take some small pieces of the overlay and patch the bend for the brake handle. This will be barely noticable when installed anyways.
