Interesting. On my last RX-8 I did the procedure with the "old" remote in my house and it still worked afterwards.

Oh well, all I know is both my fobs work and my new switchblade key works. That = me happy.

Hey all, thanks for this post. I'd tried it a couple years back when one of the fobs died (thinking it was battery or something) and it didn't work. We've obviously found that the fobs just die over time. So I used the opportunity to upgrade from the separate key and fob to the combined flip key. For two weeks I was manually locking and unlocking, it was pretty satisfying to walk away from my 8 and hear it honk again. Also, I found that my local home depot cut the blank for free, they would have charged for it if they supplied it, but since my flip key came as a blank they were able to cut it for FREE! After spending $40 on the flip fob/key that saved quite a bit versus going to the dealer. Thanks guys! :D

Probably not, they take a vendor database. Even locksmiths and small dealers have trouble getting them. The 2010 is still fixed code.

Most of these systems have a 1:1 method, it's just kept in obscurity for security reasons.

Just an FYI, I got a new uncut bladed remote from ebay for $42, programmed the transmitter last nite per the Mazda instructions - works like a charm; all functions...got the blade cut at Ace Hardware today for $2.17, came home and coded the key per the Mazda instructions and it works perfectly. And I have an '04 btw.

Like I said, mine is an '04 and I had no problems whatsoever with the programming or coding of the '05+ switchblade key.

I was able to program the remote just fine even though I didn't already have a remote, but I can't get the key to program after many tries. I've been using one master key and one valet key. Any idea why I can't get this to work? im so frustrated with it cause I followed the instructions perfectly. thanks for any help.

I ordered the switchblade from a vendor on ebay, it came with a blank key.
It took it to the dealer to get cut. I provided the little aluminum key code tag, and they cut the key for free.
Ok, confusion starts now, according to the quoted post above the incorrect serial numbers below on the picture works...

which is which?

Notice below Visteon No. 41524, Alcimedes posted as incompatible

Visteon no. 41525 and 41788 will work; 41524 will not

i just placed my order on ebay...

FCC ID: KPU41788
IC : 4238A-41525
VISTEON 41525

From one of thread poster:

Those with a 2004 that are unable to program your remote without an existing remote, don't give up and go to the dealer. It can be done. Patience is the key.
I hope this will work on me, as i don't have any existing remote (previous owner didn't mention anything if the car has).

Just got my switchblade today...
totally works on my 2004 MT...

unit i bough on ebay:

FCC ID: KPU41788
IC : 4238A-41525
VISTEON 41525

i just followed this instructions: (few modification to be more NOOB friendly like me)

Remote Programming
• Ensure that all doors, trunk, and hood are closed,
• open the driver’s door
Carry out the operation below within 24 seconds:
Insert key
• Turn ignition to the run position and off, 3 times (on-off, on-off, on-off)
• Leave key in ignition (off position, not lock or on)
• Push door switch, 3 times (The door switch is the little rubber one on the jamb of the rear door next to your elbow when sitting in the driver’s seat, which controls the interior lights.)
• Car will lock, then unlock automatically after pressing the door switch 3 times
While the car is in unlock mode, Push 'Lock' on your newly acquired remote 2 times, (some suggest unlock, so try both)
• You will notice after pressing the Lock button on your remote, Car will lock, then unlock automatically again.
• Take out you key on the ignition and test your remote.

If it doesn't work, wait for a minute or so and repeat the procedure

NOTE: I DONT HAVE any existing remote. so no need to have an existing remote to do this procedure

One question though, i notice on most Rx8, when pressing the lock button on the remote the horn will honk, but mine doesn't have... anything i missed?

I had my key duplicate @ lowe's for free...

I followed one of the members advice, i had my room key duplicated for $2, and ask the lady to duplicate my car key on the switchblade key, at first she was hesitant to do it because she says it wont work, i told her i wont blame her if it doesn't work. Then she agreed to do it and told me, she wont even charge me for it.

Key programming was really easy, less than 30 sec, and the key works like a charm.

But i still have to do something about the horn not honking when locking the car... anyone??

Sorry i just quickly skimmed through the first 5 pages but didnt find what i was looking for. Basically i have the advance keyless entry (06). So ii have the remote and the emerency key that goes inside. The key is not programmed by key i mean the emergency key thats got a chip on it. So only the remote is programmed. I recently got another key (one with chip). Is there anyway i can program the keys with the chips or do i need the dealers assistance.

You can also try Ace Hardware for key programmed.
I got my RX8 with only 1 key, took it to them, they programed new key and it works fine.

Sooo i may have a really stupid question, I bought my 8 in may, the previous owner had a Avital alarm system installed..

FCC ID: EZSDEI476
P/N - MODEL: 820031
Is what is on the back of the Keyless entry fob.

I was wondering if it was possible to program those "Switch blade" keys from mazda to work with my alarm system? Or am i **** outa luck and can only use the key w/o the keyless entry part! lol I will assume its the second since it doesnt make sense that it would program. but figured maybe it was possible since i know nothing about electronics.

What happens if you have one card key (which is programmed) and two emergency valet keys that are NOT programmed?? Would i have to go to the dealer to program the valet keys ?

I think so, everything I've read claims that you need two separate keys that are already able to start the car before in order to be able to program more keys without the help of the dealership.

OK so when I bought my 04 a few years ago, it came with 2 keys and 1 remote. The remote worked fine and both keys started the car no problem. A few months back, the remote seemed like it was dying. Sometimes I would have to press the unlock button a few times for it to work and then one day it just stopped working all together. I figured the battery died, so I put a new battery in, and it still didn't work. I tried doing the re-programming steps but it doesn't seem to be working. All goes well up until I have to press a button on the remote 2 times. After I do that, nothing happens. I've tried multiple times with the same result. By the way, both keys still start the car no problem. Any ideas??
