Haha. I didn't realize that. I guess it's time to order the switchblade! Thanks again.

So my last original key fob for my 2004 rx8 died and I ordered a new one off of ebay.

I went through the reprograming procedure but I'm not having any success past the step when the locks cycle. I can get the locks to cycle after turning the ignition switch 3 times and pressing the door switch, but when I click the key fob unlock twice nothing happens.

I've reviewed all the threads and the instructions and I can't figure out what I'm missing. I know I have the right fob as they part number is identical (41848) to the old one. I did this once before on my own with success.

Any suggestions? I'm just trying to reprogram one fob. The post above makes mention of a different part number.

Thanks,

Yeah, I came across the same problem as you and I had no luck with the original FOB. You should have bought the newer switch blade instead. Programming it is such an ease...

May be a dumb thing to ask... but are you sure the battery in the remote is OK?

As it was said, I'd have gone for a switchblade key as well... given the fact that the brand new, uncut key + remote combo is available for about $37 incl. shipping, that seems to be the way to go.

For an odd reason, once you run out of -or replaced the- battery on the 2004 FOB. The programmed keys will not work and seems that the dealer would need to reprogram it.

Really? That's weird. Never heard of this.
Are you sure this is the case?

Ya, sounds odd to me as well. When I got my car it didn't have a fob, but an Ebay switchblade remote programmed no problem. I needed to then get a second key from the dealer to be able to program the key part of the switchblade, but I didn't even need that for the remote.

I have two original FOB that ran out of battery, replaced it with new ones and the FOB stopped responding. IR receiver at AutoZone shows that it works with the new battery, in the past two years, I've tried and tried with the same steps as programming the Switch Blade and the 2004 OEM FOBs doesn't respond. The Switch Blade did well only once. May be there is a different set of procedure just for that specific FOB that's different for the Switch Blade

This may be a dumb question (it's been a couple weeks since I read this post front to back) but will any switchblade work or does it need to be a certain part # like the stand alone fob?

I ordered a spare key and a switchblade yesterday and should have them early next week. A local locksmith says he can code the spare so I can code the switchblade myself. He said if it doesn't work then there will be no cost to cut or the attempt to code them. That will save me a 90 mile trip (one way) to the nearest dealer.

For those with a switchblade and want to try, here's a post I found.

Most locksmiths will charge the same to cut a key, as long as it fits into the machine, which it should. I had no problem getting mine cut for $5.

Now, I ran a switch blade key on my '04, but never got it to program. i tried to follow the DIY procedure online, but never got it... so I can't speak as to what a deal would charge.

I received my spare and switchblade yesterday and got them cut after work and they both work like they are supposed to. A local locksmith was able to cut code them like he had said and there were no problems. He erased the previous keys in my cars data bank and programmed the 3 I had back in so the previous keys would not work. Saved me quite a drive and a decent chunk of money having it done locally. Check your local locksmiths if you are not near a dealer like in my case. You may be surprised.

I just bought the eBay switchblade key from eKeyless remotes. The quality is better than expected; I like how heavy it is. My RX8 is a 2004 model but I bought the 2005 key. Programming worked on the first try on all fronts using my one original, the valet and the new key. Easy peezy. Thanks for the instructions!

my turn...I bought a switchblade from another member on the forum here and I got the fob part of it to program, minus the trunk (my issue). Here's the stats on the switchblade:
FCC ID: KPU41788
IC ID: 4238A-41788
VISTOEN: 41788

Any ideas?

Probably, because you have a different model. I think the one you bought may have been for a CX-7 or CX-9.
