Maybe this question has been answered before in the 20+ pages... I only read the first few and was curious if I could buy a new remote for my car and program it with using only 1 key. Originally bought the car and only came with 1 key and no remote. I want a remote badly, just a hassle sometimes with the key. Lol Curious if I can still program the remote with using only 1 main key? Or will I have to buy another blank key, and program a new key first? I understand the instructions say needed 2 keys. I guess I just don't understand why exactly you need 2 keys ready in hand to program a remote only using 1 of the keys.

Only if you purchase the right switch blade from 2005+. You can program that single FOB with the only key you now have. If you do decide to program the transmitter for the new key to work, you will need to find a good locksmith or fork out the $180+ and they will order a transmitter with the key-blade already cut. Just browse back through the last two or three pages and you will see my posts for the instruction. Good Luck!

That's what I was affraid of, because I know if I'm going to have the switch blade FOB I might as well use that key. But that's gonna cost me for a lock smith. That's what I was looking for though, if I could get a 2nd key programmed using only 1 key. Found my questions answered though. Lol But I can at least program the FOB, just won't use the switchblade until I get some extra money to have a locksmith check it out. Thanks Grace!

You're welcome, good luck and make sure the number matches the Switchblade FOB you are buying.

Does your horn work when you press it in the steering wheel?

Not sure if the doors, hood and trunk need to be closed to activate the panic feature but I know if the trunk is open the car will not lock and the lights will not flash.

Did you pop the trunk before trying the panic feature?

No everything is closed & alarm is armed.
After 1min :
when I'm outside & press the panic button-nothing happend,
when I sit in the car, then wait till alarm armed, next push the horn
when I sit in the car and make some movement hazards go ON
But in all option no alarm sound at all

I recently purchased a 2004 model and it only came with 1 key and no fobs. I tried the programming on the model that is supposed to work which is the Visteon 41848. Unfortunately the doors never click/register as many have had as an issue with theirs.

I read the instructions here and noticed that it did say you needed at least have a working fob or 2 keys prior to doing this, how the hell does the system know this??? I believe that since I only have the 1 key and no other fobs that my only resort is to go to the dealership. I called them and that is what they told me and want $75 to program the 1 remote and claim an hour's worth of work which is total BS.

Unfortunately the dealership told me that even if the remote I bought does not work (which they wont know until they try it) I will still have to pay the $75 fee for them to try it out. Dealerships suck!

Sorry to hear your dilema. One question, what color is the handle on your key? Originally, the 2004 car will include two black keys, two black key chain type FOBs, and one grey key which is the valet key. The good news is, you can program the 2005+ switchblade key/fob(pictured below) using either of the three keys; however, you will need to see the dealer if you want to add an extra key for the car. Just browse through the last three pages and check my post and other members' how to program the switchblande and to make sure you have purchased the matching codes of that switchblade FOB.

The key it has is a dark gray almost black. But it on the truck so its not a valet key then. It has one key and no fobs. Prior owner must have lost the fobs. So I cannot program a single remote fob with just one key and no other fobs right? The dealership I have to go there and even if they can't program mine to work its still the $75 charge. But if I can buy a blank switch board then I can get that cut at Ace hardware and then I can program the switchblade fob myself without having to have a second remote?

I am on my phone right now, but browse through the last page or so about the information and details about the switchblade fob. I will repost the info for you when I can. But yes, you can buy the switchblade so you can have a working keyless locking remote. The original keychain fob will not work with the programming instructions in this thread.

If you only need a working fob for now, just purchase the switchblade with the right FCC ID and Visteon model(either from a local dealer or get it cheap in eBay). You can always come back here so you could program the fob yourself and save yourself any bill the dealer will charge you. Having the blade cut is not a problem, but you will not be able to program that key to work for starting the car because you needa second functioning key for that.

This is what you want. The 2004 key on the left is a fully funtioning key, the fob in the middle and the key on the right when they're attached together is the complete switchblade that I have programmed to work as a keyless entry fob. I have the blade cut as a duplicate but the transponder does not work to start the ignition. It will open my doors, trunk, glove box, and turns the car ON; but the car remains disabled. You will have to see and pay a dealer/locksmith if you want an extra functioning key.

Awesome thanks for the info! Yeah I just want a working fob for locking an unlocking the car. its lame that the regular key fob can't be programmed by itself and that I have to get a switchblade now. But if switchblade can be programmed without needing another working remote then I'm down with that. This is my 5th Mazda and my other Mazda's all came with switchbladesstock and all were pre programmed so this is my first attempt at a mazda without a keyfob already working. Basically so I can buy a switchblade fob but dont worry about cutting the key just use my stock key but the fob can be programmed with the instructions here just the regular fob can't be programmed with the instructions here. Stupid that it can't be!

Exactly. The fob that came with our 2004 seems to not respond with the programming instructions here. I have seen Youtube videos posted using the same instructions for the keychain fob we have that are successfully programmed but how sure are we that it was already working before that was performed? I also helped other members in this thread that came accross the same problem you have and were very happy with the outcome.

Going over through the thread, there is only one person that reported to have successfully programmed the 2004 keychain fob with the instructions here; unfortunately, many others and I were not, that is why we opted with the switchblade.

This is the information that you need:
FCC ID KPU41788
VISTEON NO. 41525
IC 4238A-41525

The IC numbers may change but you need to match exactly both the FCC and Visteon numbers before you purchase a MAZDA switchblade fob. I have purchased both of mine from a seller in eBay who had a CX-9. It is a bit technical if you need help where to look for those codes, I'll try to upload a short how-to-.gif.

I have found a few of the switchblades for over $80 online. Have you found them somewhere cheaper? I would also be curious if once you have a fully programmed remote switchblade ifthen you would be able to program that other key fob since you'd have one working there as well. As for matching numbers and ids the dealership is not that helpful all they would tell me was what their OEM part # was and would not give any model # or fc id numbers for me to see what will work

Recently I got 2009 RX8 with only one switchblade key. While back I bought blank switchblade key on ebay when I had S1 but never got around to cut/program it.

Wonder will this blank switchblade work on S2?

Blank is FCC ID NUMBER KPU41788

I am not sure, you'll be the first one to know, pop in a new battery and try it. Are you just provramming the fob or you want an a extra key, also?

need to have spare key, so yes need to cut and program. I guess I can try to program the key first and if that works, then I can cut the blade to have fully functional key.

need to check the working key FCC number when I get back home today.

so I successfully programed the blank switchblade I bought on ebay while back. It now opens and closes the doors. All I need to do is cut the key to match the original and I should be in business, right?

What is best place to cut the key?

Congratulations! You're the first one recorded who were able to do this on a Series II. Did your RX-8 have a regular key like many of us 2004 owners or it was a key card?

I just went to my local locksmith. You could also try Home Depot or ACE Hardware Store.

In conclusion, the switchblade can still be used on the Series II RX-8s.

Oh, what the heck, it's still a switchblade! Did you try to reprogram that, at all? Because our issue with the 2004 keychain fob is that it ran out of battery; allowing it to sit and let the battery drain itself without replacing the it before going dead, the fob seem to reset itself and loose memory of the factory keyless entry/exit program it originally had. I wonder if it is the same for our switchblade fob.

the original key( I only got one with the car) works and I had another blank one(looks the same as original) that I bought on ebay while back so I programmed the ebay key last night and it worked.

Well, if you decide to have another working transponder but only have one woeking key, you would have to go to a locksmith sho could program it. The dealer would just order you a new one which can be pricey.
