You lost all your keys?

Hi All,

Any help would be appreciated! Here's my situation:

I have an 04 with two original 04 remotes. One of them (my wife's), stopped working a while ago (can't say how long because she doesn't know exactly), probably at least several months ago. My original 04 remote still works fine, so I assumed that her battery went dead and bought a replacement, which I installed in her remote. The remote didn't work after battery replacement, so I thought that it might have to be reprogrammed, and searched this forum for answers.

I followed the steps on how to reprogram the remote, but never got the door lock confirmation after pressing the remote button twice, so the remote is still not working.

My question is, could the remote just be dead, or could I be doing something wrong? I followed the steps exactly, several times, after rereading them but couldn't get the remote to work.

I've read through a lot of this thread and am a little confused about the requirements for programming a remote. A couple of questions I have (and I'll restate the first one above), are:

1. Could my remote be dead, even after battery replacement?
2. Is there any relation to the keys and the remote when trying to program only the remote?
3. Is there any relation to the working remote when trying to program the non-working remote, or should I be able to program the non-working remote without touching the working one?

Sorry if the answers to these questions seem obvious to others that are intimate with this thread, but I'm just lost right now. Appreciate your help in advance!

It could be your remote just dead, if thats the case, u have to let a dealer to program your keys.

WankelRX8 there is not a relationship between the keys and remotes they are considered seperate by the ECU.

You should program all remotes at the same time. Start with the good one and then go to the new or non-programmed one.


Remote Programming
• Ensure that all doors, trunk, and hood are closed,
• open the driver’s door
Carry out the operation below within 24 seconds:
• Insert key
• Turn ignition to the run position and off, 3 times
• Leave key in ignition
• Push door switch, 3 times (The door switch is the little rubber one on the jamb of the rear door next to your elbow when sitting in the driver’s seat, which controls the interior lights.)
• Car will lock, then unlock (If it does not: wait 40 seconds and try again)
• Push 'Lock' on first remote, 2 times,
• Push 'Lock' on second remote, 2 times,
• Push 'Lock' on third remote (new), 2 times,
• Now all 3 remotes are accepted by the car.
A person only needs one working remote to setup a second remote but you need to program all remotes you have (up to four) when adding a new remote. Otherwise the remotes not programmed can drop off of the car’s database.
Key Programming

1. Have the additional key (key 3) ready (cut) for registration.
2. Using key 1, turn the ignition switch to the ON position (do not start).
3. Verify that the security light in the dash (looks like a little lock) illuminates for approximately 3 seconds and goes out.
4. Using key 1, turn the ignition switch to the LOCK position within 4 seconds after the security light goes out.
5. Remove key 1
6. Repeat steps 2-5 using key 2.
7. Repeat steps 2-5 using key 3.
8. If additional keys need to be registered, repeat Steps 1-7 in the same manner as key 3.

I followed all the steps, using the good remote first, but the second one did not take. Since the battery is fresh, I have to assume the second remote is dead.

I only had one working key and one non-working key fob. I did get the reprogramming to work but t didn't work in the beginning when i pressed the lock button. Try pressing the unlock button when reprogramming, it worked for me.

Hey guys!
I recently purchased a 2004 RX-8 GT. I love my car and have had no problems so far, but the guy I bought it from only had one key and one remote. My remote seemed to be getting weaker and weaker for a week or so and finally quit working yesterday. I bought a new battery and replaced the old one but now the remote doesn't work. I went through all of the steps to reprogram it (not sure if it should be necessary) with no luck. It seems that the remote might be toast because I can get the car to enter programming mode but I get no response when I push the buttons on the remote.

Here's my question:
I have seen the flip-out keys and would really like to get one for mine. Since I only have one key I know I'll have to go to the dealer to get it programmed (hopefully they won't rape me too hard on the price).

My remote says FCC ID KPU41805. Will this remote work for my car?

Any help would be appreciated, as I don't want to order it and not be able to get it programmed. These forums are awesome! I will probably be sitting here reading everything for the next week haha

The alternative is to just buy a regular or valet key from the dealer (Around $50 I think. Maybe that was just the cost of the key though..) That's what I did, because I got my car with one key and no remote. It's always an alternative if the dealer refuses to program a key from elsewhere or charges an outrageous price. I had bad luck getting my key cut though, so you may want to just stick to the dealer.

I think that key will work. IIRC there are a couple models on Ebay, and it seems like everyone has had good luck with one model, then most everyone has had good luck with the other. I'd try and check in this thread though for that FCC ID. I'm pretty sure it's burried somewhere.

For clarification: when it says I need two working keys, it means JUST keys - not remotes, correct?

I had 2 keys and 2 remotes for my car. The keyless entry receiver died, and the dealer replaced it. I guess the receiver part comes with a remote, because they gave me a brand new remote. So, if you're following along, I now have 2 keys cut for the car and 3 remotes. Problem is, only the new remote that they gave me works (because the old ones are not coded for the new receiver, I assume). Is it possible to code the other two remotes myself, using the two keys I have?

That is a correct deduction WTWally.

You only need one fob to program another but two keys are needed to add another.

I was able to program my fob and key with no fobs.. (but 2 keys.) So ya, if you've got one you'll be fine.

URGENT!!! MY KEY IS STUCK IN THE IGNITION!!! What happened? Does the car lock the nonprogrammed key at the end? I assume I did something wrong. I do want to drive my car today so any help will be greatly appreciated

cool. and if the key can turn to the on position but wont start? ac goes on and everything, i just cant get the key out. i will go try that

the blinking key symbol will tell you everything you need to know as to why it won't start.

do you have access to a copy of the html 'workshop' manual?
(the codes are probably also in the pdf shop manuals too...)

i got it out and the car starts with it now if i am in the car, what is the process step by step? also, what is the drivers side door thing that i have to press three times...?

I'm trying to follow the steps to program the fob. I have followed the turn the key 3 times, followed by the door switch 3 times. This makes the doors lock and unlock.

The next step says Verify door actuators lock/unlock. Well they don't, and it says wait 40 secs and start again! How do I get past this?

Ok guys I would like to do this today but need something clarified. When I program the key, do I need to use the two '04 keys, the new '05 key and the valet key? I am not sure if it is necessary to program the valet key. If I don't use it, will it still work? Any help would be appreciated. I need to know so I can go program the new key. Thanks.

Ok guys I just did this and it works great. It was actually pretty simple. I bought the key from 4 years to supercharge in which he provided me the instructions. His were very easy with added tips and even edited so that none of the other keys were erased from the database. Thanks dude, eventhough I bought the key from you months ago.

I must have missed the question that you posted.

It is always safe to program all the keys you have including the valet key. If for some reason there was another key added in between the valet and the ones you have and it did surpass the 8 that you can have on the car's ECU then the valet could drop off.
