DIY: Filling the RX-8 engine (motor) mounts with urethane

not a traditional DIY, but it is detailed in this thread:

https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-tech-garage-22/collapsed-motor-mount-vibration-82126/

just making it easier to find

if you don't want to read the entire thread here are the important post links that will pretty much spell it out for you:

https://www.rx8club.com/showpost.php...8&postcount=12

https://www.rx8club.com/showpost.php...3&postcount=35 (updated 12/26/11)

https://www.rx8club.com/showpost.php...5&postcount=37 (updated 12/26/11)

There are other threads on R&Ring the engine mounts from the chassis

not too difficult, best wishes

Mines shaking a little bit. I might need new motor mounts in the near future. Filling it with urethane will stop the shaking? If it is, i might need it soon.

Also try 3M's Window-Weld. I used it on my Eclipse GST back in the day. Worked great and is available at your local auto parts retailer.

Your recommendation is a thick urethane caulking in a tube. This application needs a pourable urethane to fill in all the inaccessible nooks and crannys. I highly recommend the listed product

Did you notice any significant differences between the stock mounts (While they were still good) and the urethane filled mounts? My main concern was that filling every nook and cranny would have made the mounts too hard which may essentially cause the same issue. Mine are gone too. I will have to fix the mounts also.

if you're concerned about the stiffness just use a 60A shore instead of a good 80

1 lbs of Shore 60A from McMaster-Carr is #8644K24 (use for street)

Shore 80A is #8644K11 (use for high performance/race)

the factory engine mounts have motion limiters that interact with the engine mount brackets. If the mount moves around too much, like when they are worn out or torn open, the engine is bouncing around on the motion limiters and causing a lot of the ruckus.

Are you experiencing any vibration at low rpm, and if so how severe? I'd like to go with the 80A for performance reasons, but my wife drives my car pretty often, so i don't want to hear her whine about its vibrant idle at stop lights. Also, my car is using the older motor mount design (without a heat shield on RT MM) is yours the newer motor mount or older motor mount design?

Sorry for the flood of questions, i had been interested in purchasing an 8 for awhile but only recently was presented with an offer i couldn't refuse. Just picked up an 05 with 30,000 miles and i think right hand motor mount is cracked. I don't think motor mounts are covered under warranty, so i'm looking for an economical solution to the problem.

to answer does the car drive differently---yes it does.
Look at some track videos that show the gearshifter and notice how much movement the shifter is doing when the chassis is under a load. Doing this to the engine mounts gets rid of a lot of that movement.
You will feel a better throttle response ( from reduced engine movement) and the trans will shift better during high perforamnce driving.
This mod is a no brainer.
And no with a shore of 60 ( say using window wield just for example) there is no nvh that I can feel.
I have been running these type mounts for over 2 years and np with them. I do it a little differently but in the end it about the same.
Good write up Mark.

Is this, in any way, like the Shinka's "foam urethane filled front suspension cross member"? I know it's a different part, but does it have the same/similar effect?

Thumbs up

Followed the instructions for this last week and re-installed them today. Fantastic write-up and very thorough. My passenger side was half torn open, so I used tape to seal the split until the urethane cured; the only visible difference now is a darker line at the location of the crack. I will re-evaluate the passenger mount in a couple weeks, but as of now I feel very confident in it. Thanks Team for sharing this information!

No, I don't think there is any need to go softer. I am making a harder set.

I will want $$ plus a deposit for your undamaged OE mounts, which will be returned upon my receiving them

I ordered the 1 lbs of Shore 60A from McMaster-Carr and it just got here and i noticed the box was really light so i opened it up and the quart can was only like 2 fingers deep with urethane and the activator bottle was like half empty too. Is that normal? and is that enough to fill both mounts?

I am running the 80A and in my opinion it is just fine for the street. My mounts were in good condition before having this done (thanks Houstonrx8er) so it wasn't a drastic change but they feel great now. Maybe a tad more NVH but nothing extreme.
