DIY: Footwell lights
#51
Just did this over the weekend. I had a heck of a time getting them to work properly until I realized that the crimps I was using weren't small enough to pierce the coating on the wires that the LEDs had attached to them. I hooked the LEDs up to the blue/red and green/black wires and now they come on and off with the rest of the interior lights when the doors are opened and closed. Oh! The passenger side wires are very short so I did what I read on here and ran the wire to the drivers side and wired everything up over there. Thanks for all the great info on this site guys.

DId the same thing on the daughters car over the weekend also. Took about 10mins on the drivers side and like you said the scotck-loks were not small enough and so I pinched them a little close and then worked fine. And as you said the passemger side was a PIA but was able to get it done. We also ran some of those BLUE LED'sthat are a thin strip with 3m tape on the back about 12" under the rubber seal on the bottom of the door. So when you open the door the footwell and the outer edge of the door frame lights up also.

Dang, so I ordered some led strips and now I wanted to run the passenger side wire to the driver side to splice them. But the wires are too short! Any way i can continue this project?

I would recommend investing in a cordless soldering iron. The butane powered ones are usually a bit stronger, but the battery operated ones are easier to handle. I have done this with either one. get some 18g wire as well. I recommend soldering over splicing because splices can move, or wear out over time. Plus they dont seal as well. Shrink wrap and electrical tape. If you look at the other footwell lighting post I have photos up of where to cut into.
If you are using the LED strip with 3m tape on the back you will need to make sure you get the weather sealed ones. In case the strip comes loose. This will keep you from shorting it out. Also use picture hanging tape to secure the strips. This stuff is stronger than duct tape.

Im having a lot of trouble locating the "solid blue wire with red stripe" on the passenger side. I can't find it anywhere. can someone show me which bundle to look at. I found the solid green one, is in the same bundle?

Auto to manual swapped
It might have to do with the year of your car. Double check the bundle and if you have to cut some of the tape. Make sure you get the right wire btw there's a red w/ blue and a blue w/ red wire. Don't ask me how I know

Yea, the red with blue is in the bundle as the solid green with black. But where's the blue with red stripe. There's another two buddles that are part of the white connecter but its way up there and theres no way I could possibly reach up there and cut the tape to find the wires. The space is really tight. There's also two buddles with black tap, and also yellow tap wrapped around it. Is it in those?

First of all, thanks for an awesome DIY. Amazing job.
Now.... please help an idiot who has no idea whats going on. I followed everything to the letter, and it kinda works. For some strange reason though, my LEDs come ON when the door is shut, and OFF when the door is open. I tried reversing polarity for the hell of it and of course, the LEDs don't work that way.
Any ideas? Please? I have an 05 RX8 if it helps.
Thanks!

Wiring????
OK so I ordered the LB4 Bar from super bright leds because they didn't have any LB3 left. I got 2 bars and their both about 6in. in length and blue.
Only problem is that they didn't come with any wiring so my question is how could I wire them. Would I have to solder wiring to the bars themselves. Here's some pics I took of them.

So I tapped into these wires for my LEDs that I bought. They turned on when the doors opened, and everything worked great.
BUT
My dashboard was dead. All my gauges were dead and unresponsive. Then as I was driving on the freeway, my car died on me! I bump started it back up, but i could really use some advice to why this happened.
I bought a new battery in case, but I am still afraid to re-tap the lights back in. Any help is appreciated.

Bad Mistake
So, I did what the DIY did, made sure to tap the correct wires in the correct place, and it worked! Great! Faded in and out fine, but when I went to drive the car it couldn't keep the engine running. In neutral and have the clutch in the rpms would fluctuate up to 2000 then to 1000 back to 1500 then dropped to 0, killed the engine so many times but after I disconnected it the problem occurred one time and then no problems after that. Can someone tell me what I did wrong, or if the LED'S were drawing too much power for it or what?
