okay so instead of running a second hose into the intake you install the breather on the other can port. and then vacuum cap the open hole in the intake correct??

and this is all available at autozone/oriellys?

Yup

That's fine... just keep in mind that the product doesn't have to say its made for a Mazda vehicle.
A catch can is a catch can no matter what vehicle its installed in.
I like the clear hose on the side so you can visually see the oil level collected in the can.

oil/water seperators are essentially the same thing, and can be found MUCH cheaper, and in a wider variety of colors, materials, shapes, sizes, and functional features

Well. I went ahead and did this today. Didn't buy a catch can but instead a coolant reservoir. Just took some time to move the plugs but only cost me like 15 with everything. Painted it, and it looks pretty good. Now I just have to get a breather just to be that much extra safe... Nice DIY man, you have officially saved me too many times cleaning out my accordion tube.

Alright, got everything setup today after work. Didn't have time to paint it due to the fun ohio weather we are having+work so thats still on the way but... for 15 dollars+can of paint you can't beat it. Still gotta do the paint part but I'm going to have a buddy do that for me. (Might suck@painting) But I'm pretty happy with it. Functional + cheap.

^...........problem I see is that it's mounted so high, that oil will never likely even get up that far.
Can you mount it somewhere lower where gravity will once again be your friend?

^So what is the problem with that?
It'll likely still collect the oil vapors and the heavier stuff/vapors that might settle in the tube will just drain back down into the filler neck.
Having a difficult time visualizing how having it higher is bad.

Guess I wasn't thinking about it from a vapor type situation, but more from an overfill perspective. That would be a lot of overfill wouldn't it....and the damn oil filler cap had better be on tight at that point!

so im wondering... topped off the day i got everything installed and no oil has entered the container. Just really curious to see of my little buddy is functioning. Maybe i just didn't top off enough? haha...and it's a 710 cap ( Showed my buddy that the oil cap upside down is 710) and he insisted that i 710 cap it lol... But yeah, its on there pretty good... And my bad, what do you mean it's overkill? lol maybe i should try and mount it a little lower we'll see...

If you have your oil filled properly, it shouldn't get anything in it. Plus having your hose from the filler neck to catch can run "uphill" will help keep anything out of there.

I've had mine on for a year now and all i've collected is oil fumes... enough to darken the clear tube to see the level, but no substantial liquid. The real test to see if its working is to check your intake.

I just got my RX-8 last week, and one of the thing i was already planned to do was oil catch can.

I had the catch can on my previous ride when I put turbo on it, so I kept it before I traded in.
The catch can I had is by Moroso, and it is pretty large.
It was not a problem on Solara I had on originally, but found RX-8 had no room in engine bay at all!!

took me good one hour or so figuring out where to mount, and how to run the tube and get a mounting hardware.

Anyways, it's been installed and feeling good that now my intake will not gonna be covered by oil.

I ran my line slightly downhill from filler neck to catch can, just to be sure to capture anything, yet also after a year there's never been any oil in it. Then again, I do my own oil changes/replenishments and therefore no overfills - Intake dry as a bone, and that's a good thing.
