Above is a link to the OBD2 device i bought on amazon do I need a different one for my Mazda? There seems to be lots of them.
This is the one that i used to do my programming. Note that this is connected via Bluetooth and not Wifi.

From my understanding though, OBD2 is OBD2. It shouldn't matter what car it is aslong as it has the connector. Quality is a different issue.

Worked like a champ! Got my $9.95 key from eBay programmed so now I have 2 keys. I was going to try this before buying another key for my Red RX8 but the seller sold out so now I have to take a chance on another cheap key. Anyone have a source for good switchblade keys? The plan was to add another key to each vehicle and then put them in the safe after I got some switchblade keys.

Glad to hear it! Its been a long time since I wrote this, but the switchblade key that I got for my 2004 can be found all over ebay with the search "kpu41788". Do your homework on if it will work.

Now go get that key cut while you gather the other tools needed...

The tools:
- ELM327 Bluetooth OBDII Adapter: These are cheap, I got mine off ebay for ~8 bucks to the door. Wired would work also, probably wifi versions that are compatible with iProducts too.
- A PC with bluetooth (option 2, wired adapter, wired to this pc, or wifi).
- FORScan OBDII software for the PC (the android and iPhone versions do not have the features you need to do this, but they have other capabilities that I will discuss later). Note, currently there is only a BETA version that works, make sure you read through the process notes below.
- FORScan's (currently free) extended license.
- Access to a website to decode the outcode and turn into an incode (this is discussed within the FORScan instructions, and its currently free as well).
- Your original key and the new cut key.

The Process:
I am a FORScan user, I use it to monitor various OBDII sensors. FORScan beats the competition because it easily allows me to access all the buses, this feature was not so simple in other softwares like Torque, etc. FORScan is designed for Ford, Mazda, Lincoln, Merc, etc. So all the PIDs that are available are already in the software. No need to mess around with adding separate pids. I've been using it on my Android and my windows pc tablet for a while now. Recently, I learned that FORScan for the windows pc supports PATS programming and also the RX-8, this is the feature that programs keys. So I took a challenge to overcome the Mazda costs and use this to program a 2nd key.

The first time I tried this, I had an error pop up that PATS programming is not compatible with my 2004 RX-8 saying because I had a push-button start. That is false so I contacted the support for FORScan and they worked with me to resolve the issue, then release a BETA version. This version is v2.33 and can be found here:

I did not erase any keys, I went to the spare key program option and followed through with the instructions.

Note Problems faced:
During the programming portion, the software told me that the key programming failed. I reported this and it was explained to me that the OEM key is 40 bit and some of the aftermarket are 80 bit, which would cause an error. I went to module initialization after that thinking my key was still unprogrammed and did that with success but I don't think that was need. I then noticed the anti-theft light disappeared from my dash with the new key, meaning, my new key is programmed!!! SUCCESS!!!

After this, I did the factory 3rd key programming sequence and that worked fine. I now have three working keys, 2 of which are aftermarket keys!

Important little tidbit:
This saved me a ton of cash as you can see, I offered to donate to these guys but they don't accept donations. Their turnaround support time was incredibly fast (within hours I had a new version of the software)! Therefore, I want to do anything I can to give them a heck of a high-five...

If this works out for you, buy the phone version or a paid version when that is available, its cheap, that is the only way to support them at the moment. Links to follow:

I registered just to say thanks to the OP for putting this up. I had to make an additional key for my 08 Mazda3, only had 1 original key, and this enabled me to make an additional key.

The only thing different that I did was that I used a connected cable, same one that I use for my Toyota Techstream programming.

I cant say... FORSCAN has a list of supported vehicles, if its on the list, then it should work

One key already disabled

I only got one key with my rx8 when I purchased it used. The immobilizer locked me out... Do you think this will work to fix it? I was going to just send the ECU to racing beat to have the immobilizer completely removed but if this will work I would rather do this.

I'm not sure how the immobilizer comes into play... there might be an option with forscan to override that. Might be worth asking those guys.

I'm not sure if people are still active on this thread, but I thought I'd give it a shot anyway... Can't hurt to ask right!?
I bought a 2006 mazda 3 sport a few months back, but it only came with one key. A few days later, my son managed to damage the transponder chip in the key when he dropped them onto a concrete floor from about 2 stories up. I was kinda screwed at that point, and had to fork out over £200 for a locksmith to come out to my house and to 'attempt' to reprogram a couple new keys. I say attempt, because he wasn't wholly successful. He replaced the transponder chip and managed to get the original key working again, so I was back to one fully working key. He then went to pair the aftermarket key he cut and paired to the ecu, but was unsuccessful. I was out with him and he even rang a few other locksmiths to see if they could shed any light on the matter, but to no avail. He was trying to pair it using the ignition/door sequence but it never got past the point where you add the new key. He said it was something to do with not having two central locking paired keys, as you have to click unlock on the main fob and the second fob before you can start adding new ones. Basically the key is paired insomuch that it will start the car without any issues, but the remote central locking doesn't work. So to use the second key you have to manually unlock the doors which sets the alarm off, and then quickly put the key into the ignition to silence the alarm. I guess this is kind of opposite to the problems some of you were having...

What I'm asking is, with the guidance outlined above, or by contacting forscan, will I be able to pair the coded and cut aftermarket key so that the central locking works on it? When you manually unlock your car, if you turn and hold the key for a few seconds, doesn't the alarm shut off? It's not really an answer to your question, but it might make it less annoying while you don't get it fixed.

Did you ever get a answer for this question I currently have a 05 3 hatch that the immobilizer system has me locked out as well and not sure how to reset it

I know it's been a while, but seems like an easy question for you guys.

I tried the forscan - PATS key programming and successfully programmed 2 switchblade keys. I actually wanted to erase 6 keys previously installed in the car, but I was scared that the new keys I bought wouldn't work and I'd be stuck with in inoperable car. Good thing it was just 6 because the 2 keys I programmed made it reach it's 8 key limit. Anyway, my question is: Do you think it's safe to go back in, erase ALL keys and then just install the keys I personally have (4 keys) EVEN though they are not OEM keys? It seems safe seeing as how both new keys we're successfully programmed and started the car up.

I noticed that forscan forums warn users about non-OEM keys:

Note 2017-01-03: users' experience says that B1601 code is not a guarantee of a flawless work. We already have several complaints (all for domestic market cars) when high quality but non-OEM keys produced B1601 code but cannot be programmed. In all cases replacing non-OEM key with OEM one fixed the issue. So please: (i) ask seller for money back warranty in case of non-working key and (II) do not use Erase Keys function until you are sure the new key can be successfully programmed (remember, engine will not start in case of PATS memory has less than 2 learned keys).
