DIY: Remote Turbo System

Based on high volume of PM and email messages I get from people with questions about building the remote turbo, I figured that that I should start this DIY tread.
It would help answer many questions without me having to type up the answers to every one who is interested on individual bases.

This is what the parts prices are for a more or less complete remote turbo setup.
This does not include any fabrication costs, just the parts.

Most of it can be purchased from ebay, home depot, local Autozone or Pep Boys stores

Element Part / Cost
Pre Intercooler aluminized intake runner 2" pipe / 75
Cant remember the exact length, but you'll need about the car length. I got this, bent and welded to my spec. at a local muffler shop.

Turbo mount
Flange / 25 (ebay)
Pipe (45* bent) / 20 (autozone/pep boys)
Heat Shield / 30 Home depot 1mm stainless/galvanized steel
(Off course aluminum can be used, But it would have to be then bolted on instead of just welded to the mount).

Internal Waistgate (Turbonetics) / 200 or a little under.

T3/T04E Turbo / 200

Downpipe/Exhaust
Downpipe Flange / 35 (ebay)
Resonator / 125 (mine is custom made)
2.5" steel L bend / 10 (pep boys or autozone)
Tips / 65 (ebay or autozone grab a pair to your liking)

Intercooler / 200 ( or less on ebay )
Intercooler aluminum piping / 120 (ebay,
Intercooler piping I purchased online. There are now some piping kits that are sold on ebay, that may actually be quite good for the price.

Global Tech & Engineering, or RacingSolutions )

BOV / 60 (ebay)
BOV Adapter Pipe / 50 (ebay)

Air Filter / 45 (Autozone)
Air filter accordion duct / 20 (Autozone)

Oil Lines (Copper) 20' roll 1/4" and 20' roll 3/8" / 80 (Home depot)

Oil Feed/Return Line and fittings / about 120 on eBay.
Or you could just improvise with stuff from home depot. I just got the ebay kits to save myself the headache.

Oil Pump / 250 - 300
Oil Filter sandwich plate / 50

Boost Gauge ...
AF Gauge ...
Greddy profec B II Boost Controller / 475 or you can get a manual from eBay for $50. I still run around with the manual controller, but hate it, and want to upgrade.

Interceptor-X / 1499 + tax = 1600 or so.

Misc Fittings / 75 (Home Depot/Autozone/Pep Boys)
Misc Hoses / 50 (Home Depot/Autozone/Pep Boys)
Couplers, Reducers, Clamps / 200 or so depending on the implementation (ebay)

I'll add more if I forgot something, but I think that about does it.

Depending on your location and time frame I may or may not be able to build/install, or assist in building/installing the system.
If you however do want me to do the job for you, and are willing to drop the car over at my place for me to work on, feel free to PM me for the price and availability.

Also I am working on putting together a very detailed set of instructions, on how to build the system step by step. It will include close up pictures of what my current setup is, explanations of what how and where it can/must be improved, illustrations and drafts for the new versions of the parts. Limited phone support, and unlimited email support. This I will be packaging as a DIY Instructions kit and it will be available for sale.
Again PM for more information if interested.

Happy turboing everyone. Good luck to anyone who may decide to get creative.

Would an external wastegage be suffice? Could I just weld it on right before the turbo. Have you ever got a dyno to see what kind of gains you recieved? What did you use for supports for the turbo and intake piping? And i noticed you used an intercooler...do you think the intake would cool enough that it wouldn't be neccesary? I own an 2007 Eclipse GS, and I have been scowering the internet to try and find someone who has done this besides a vette, mustang or a truck. I ran across your accomplishments and it has helped me out tremendously. Thank you for any help you may give me and congratulations and much props your success and ingenuity!

The problem is that he is doing more than 8 psi, and the heat isn't from the intake, but after the turbo when it's compressed. Heat is a by product.

Oh, I also meant to ask...is the T04E satisfactory or would you reccomend a different turbo? I'm piecing together all the stuff on eBay at the moment, so I want to make sure and get the right stuff. I saw you might get rid if your T04E and get the B...

It depends on how you like it.
I found it running out of air, but it is an old turbo too by now. It has been misbehaving lately.

Yes I am going to rebuild this thing with t04b, already ordered the turbo, but this is my own experimentation. I can not say how it will be behaving.

I do have an intercooler. and a large one at that. Helps a great deal. It really keeps my intake charge cool.

I recently installed the temp sensor (MAF sensor) into the intake pipe, which allowed me to see the intake temps real time, and if the Int-X is calibrated correctly, while running the charge temp is a steady 18*C and it rises to 20-21* when boosting really hard.

Just to compare, while idling for about 3-5 minutes (hot day), the intake temps will get up to 33-35C (close to ambient where I live), but as soon as I start driving, it goes back down.

One thing I am not sure how to explain is how than hell it makes my charge that much colder than the ambient temperature, but i guess I need to keep on reading the Corky Bell's book, which I received 2 days ago

Oh and whatever information and picks anyone may need, they are in the original tread. https://www.rx8club.com/showthread.php?t=97855

the int-x changes the maf intake temp readings. It doesn't scale exactly, but I can get a rough idea of intake temp by taking the number odb2 reads, and doubling it.

So are the numbers you're seeing from the int-x itself, the same as what the odb2 reads?

ok...

when you said you saw 18C intake temps, what was ambiant?

Cause that's 64F, which isn't likely right now in FL. But 120F as an intake temp is possible.

That would amount to 64F intake charge, while ambient is around 95F

I don't know, man.
looks like it is reading correctly while in idles. with no compression going on, it just sucks the ambient air and around 35C (95F)

That is why I am confused. As soon as I start driving enough to push the air through the intercooler, the intake temps go down to close to 20C range and lower.

Logically i would expect it to remain at the ambient temps, or go up a little, when in boost, but what it is is what it is... It actually cools the air.

And the sensor is installed on the pressure side of the intake. After the intercooler.
