DIY: Replace Your (Heavyweight) Car Mats
I'm not really paranoid about the weight of the RX8 car mats, but I find stubborn dirt constantly embedded in them and even a good vacuum sometimes doesn't do well.
So I decided to replace them with Ikea's Rationelle non-slip drawer mats. Extremely lightweight and easy to vacuum and wash. The small, multiple protrusions on one side server to trap dirt - pretty effective!
- Two rolls will suffice for both driver and front passenger footwells.
- Cut into shape, put short velcros on the SMOOTH side of the mat at 3 positions - front, back and door exit side, that's it.
Believe me, it doesn't run about and obediently moulds itself onto the footwells after a while.
And when I removed all four mats - whoa - behold the weight of the stock mats!!! (Note: the rear mats have not been replaced since there's hardly a soul at the back)
