DIY: RP (AFE) Short Shifter install.
#126
Just got the shifter today and had to install it right away, no problems whatsoever. That problem tab seemed pretty sturdy on mine, I just yanked that piece and the two back clips came undone without a problem.
Also, I was rereading some of the earlier posts about the transmission noise some people had. Well, I was always aware of that noise myself, even with the stock shifter. I think the noise level is about the same, although the sound is slightly different for some reason (actually sounds better to me but maybe I was hallucinating).

Oops, I did an error :(
I was doing some stuff today, scratching around my shifter/gearbox, and I noticed some cracks in the shifter retainer plate!
First pic. View from above.
Second pic. View on end to show the deformation.
Third pic. Viewed from down under. Why it went bad. I didn't ensure the tiny aligning dowell was in the alignment hole properly. Bad Hymee!
Please ensure you get it in the right place before tightening those bolts!
Cheers,
Hymee.
Edit: Why are IMG tags off in this thread???
PS - Kunz had a problem removing the bolt adjacent to this pin... https://www.rx8club.com/australia-new-zealand-forum-37/uh-oh-82191/

Awesome DIY, I just got mine installed with a Voodoo Pearl Magnum ****, and I love it. Shorter throw, comfortable ****, and it "clicks" into gear. No mush...I'll recommend this all day long. I wouldn't have ordered mine without all of the good comments on here, so I want to thank all of you.

You don't offend me and I will not hide it from you. You can get one right from Mazdaspeed. Of course it is more diffcult to install and doesn't improve the feel in any way. But then again it only costs $400.00. Pays yo money gets yo choice.
Oh yeh, they also don't have a warrenty much less a life of the car one.

Reminds me of that scene in The Life of Brian where somebody said Jehova.
No worries LittleLebowski - you did mention you were not meaning to offend.

Agree with Gomez.
MazdaSpeed is way more expensive and some people used it before RP's like the RP's one better.
If I remember correctly the Acura one made in US is $80 but it is simply a pulley handle - not a whole shaft replacement that machined beautifully by Richard

Hey, a little off-topic but my shifter cover area (you know, around the gearbox) has been acting weird lately...any pressure on it will cause it to make annoying 'creaking' sounds, like smashing potato chips or something. I don't know what caused this. Should I take off the cover and see what's goin on?
