I replaced the air filter for the first time recently, after watching the videos and reading the posts. For me, it turned out to be easier than I had previously imagined. The technique lies in the systematic release of the airbox from the 4 rubber grommets. Rather than shoving the thing back brutally (which also risks dislodging and losing grommets), just lift the box out of the top grommets first (pull firmly on each one at a time until the prong pops out), then get your hands down under the box and pull it out of each of the lower grommets one at a time. All 4 should release relatively easily with firm pulling. The direction to pull the top out is obvious for the top, not as readily obvious for the bottom. Use a work light to view the lower grommets as you pull the box out of them to ensure you are pulling in the correct plane and direction for easier removal.

The only additional exertion to finally pull the box up for filter access is pressing back against the accordian tube to clear the plastic clip in front ( this clip is vestigial on many models and can be cut off if desired for easier subsequent airbox removal).

Yea be careful with those gromets, I somehow lost both my lower ones. It doesnt really affect the box much it is still solidly in place but I wish I had them.

Well, i just completely broke one of the hinge pieces off of the top air filter cover .

Does anyone know a website that would have that part?

I tried finishline and i couldnt find it.

The same is happening to me cant take it out for the small tube in the front, im afraid to break it .

Any suggestion?

Did this today and after reading the little trick on pushing the air box back and lift it was pretty easy. The car rev's and idles much smoother now, im not sure about power loss or gains from it but since I first had it, at idle it had a shutter every few seconds thats now gone.

I know mazda did an extensive job fine tuning the air box so I wonder what the real purpose of them is.

I just undo the hose clamp holding the tube to the box, and the MAF/VFAD wires.

Pull straight up on the back of the box. It comes right out of the tube and folds up out of the car.

To put it back I just insert the front and lower it to the tube. Then I lift the tube until it is partially in place. Push down on the box and the tube slides on as the box drops into place.

A 10MM socket or flat screwdriver does it.

I put them back this morning, it made the car sound like a 92 honda with a fart can on it and I didnt feel much difference with and without them.

Thanks for the DIY, seems like my filter was loose at the bottom already though and I've never noticed.
