DIY: UHF CB Install
Here's how i installed my Uniden UH015SX. I chose this 5Watt model because of the detachable head unit.
The aerial placement may not suit everyone but i get about 2km/1.2 miles on the highway which is all i require plus it doesn't detract from the looks of the 8.
I tried to do this install with a minimum footprint on the 8. If the time ever comes to uninstall it you would never know there was one installed in the first place.
The aerial is held firmly in place with zip tyes.
Next step is to remove the parcel holder in between the two rear seats, it just pulls out, no screws or clips.
Remove the gear stick cover. This is covered in other forums, but basically take out the little round plug, remove the gear stick **** then firmly lift the cover to unclip it
Remove the centre console. there are six screws, four at the rear, one in the middle right hand side, looking from the rear to the front and one at the front. They are all easily located. Remove wiring from centre cig lighter.
Next secure the transceiver at the rear.
There are two ready made threaded holes to accomodate 3/8" gutter bolts to hold the transceivers craddle in place. I had to drill out the cradle slots a little.
I laid down a piece of leather to minimse vibration and rattle.
When you have the cradle and vibration dampener in place attach the flat cable that came with the Uniden for the head unit to the transceiver. With the speaker facing upwards and the flat cable facing the boot, attach the transceiver to the cradle.
Attach the aerial, power (splice into cig lighter) and audio cable.
I won't be using the Uniden speaker. I have an AUX input to the 8's stereo and i will be using that. I did have to make an audio cord from mono male 3.5mm to stereo female 3.5mm. Couldn't find one in the local electronics store.
The AUX input in covered in numerous other posts, i used an Intergrated Solutions Direct Ipod + AUX with Text which can be selected from steering wheel or simply pressing Tape/MD on the 8's stereo.
Remove the latch holder in the middle of the centre console, there are two small srews underneath the wadding. Drill a hole in the centre console to route the flat cable to the cup holder compartment. I tried so hard not to get the wadding tangled in the drill and failed, ah well nothing a little glue didn't fix. Carefully using a utility knife, carve a slot for the flat cable.
Next i ran my audio cable thru the gear stick compartment to the AUX jack.
While everthing is nice and loose is a good time to squeeze the mic connector underneath the silver strip on the side of the centre console near the handbrake into the cup compartment. I zip tyed the cable to prevent fouling in the handbrake mechanism.
Next was putting the centre console back together and routing the flat cable to the cupholder compartment.
I mounted the Uniden's HU in the cup holder compartment with double sided tape on the back and bottom of the HU. It's as solid as a rock, but make sure you position it correctly, you only get one go.
See pics in next post.
