DIY: Vinyl Wrap Your Roof/Hood/Whatever (Carbon Fiber)
So I decided to wrap my roof which would be cheaper than replacing my roof with a real carbon fiber overlay. Plus, I didn't know how it would look and this is easy to take off and protects the paint against the sun (even though it's garaged). My dad wanted to help and a big piece is easier to do with two people.
How To:
First of all these are cliff notes but these are the main points I could probaly write a book on this. After I wrapped my entire Yamaha R1 I decided why not do the roof.
1) Get your vinyl I highly recommend HexisUSA as after I read 3M's vinyl information I was 100% convinced on HEXIS
see for yourself

2) You'll need a felt tipped squeegee and a butane torch/heatgun to lift up and heat to remove wrinkles only. Only set down when it's cold again and do not stretch when hot it will deform and you will get crows feet
3) You'll need a helper
4) You must do a dry install (no water as this dosen't work with the adhesive it's not tint)
5) Remove everything you can the plastic rails and the moon roof if you have one.
6) Prep the surface no wax no dirt no bug or it won't stick
7) Place a piece of painters tape and do it half and half as shown in the video (I learn better from watching)
8) Gently use the squeegee from the middle out. Gently is so that it can be easily lifted if you need to replace
9) Your going to mess up your first piece so go buy another. It's like a sport. You need practice unless your some sort of god.
It's not letting me upload so here is some photobucket

In my experience with 3m you can heat and stretch with no adverse affects. I know you posted a link to their website but I've personally talked with the 3m reps and it is waranted for 1 year installed outdoors in the horizontal position and 3 years in the vertical position. Glad you got positive results though, I was curious how some of the off brands would perform/install.
I do prefer the second gen 3m dinoc to the first because they put sipes on the adhesive side to aid in releasing trapped air and general install. It makes it SO much easier lol Nice writeup though man :-)

Ok you guys here are some photos. I did the roof and side panels. Looked pretty good for my 2nd time wrapping as I did my old white rx8. PS. The guy in the picture is my dad not me. He was nice enough to lend a hand because you need two people.

Hey Sugarfree135,
Hexis is the same way with heating and stretching but one time I had a problem when I was wrapping my friends car with their vinyl so they gave me a roll of 33ft for free sent to my door =)
If you trust 3M go for it. Their vinyl is fine they even have some cool matte colors hexis doesn't; I just don't like their warranty. I'm just skeptical because they talked to you in person rather than having written documentation and they are sales reps. If I needed a special matte color like matte red I would buy from them ONLY 2 reasons I don't like them as much is just the warranty (I know it will last just as long but it's just not written down on paper). And it's more convenient to drive down the street to hexis rather than 30 minutes to ontario, ca lol
I do have a big problem when I wrap larger things with Hexis carbon fiber as it tends to have lots of bubbles regardless of how you install it. I'll definitely keep in mind for next time and probably use the 3M dinoc due to the stripes on the adhesive because that would definitely help my problem! Thanks for advice man.
