MM, any thoughts on ball park figures for NA on a car that is basically stock and one that has exhaust/intake/midpipe?

i use to have my cz tuned to stay around a 12.8-13.0 afr which kept my egt's under control and also let me use 89 octane year round but still gave a pretty decent power gain... is a map for something like that possible?

No dyno results yet, but it wouldn't be unreasonable to see 15 or 20 HP. YRMV.
More importantly, you will gain torque in areas of the map where there is too much fuel in the OE calibration.
If it isn't enough, I'll get you a better tune.

A lot of what makes or breaks a tune will be the intake. Stock intakes will almost universally make more power out of the box.

That is interesting a stock intake will make more. Is that because there is more to gain?

^^ Exactly.
All of the aftermarket intakes (including, unfortunately, the turbo setups) screw up the MAF flow more than they improve the overall flow.

will the gains from a NA tune with a highflow cat be much different than those with a straight pipe? Or will that not matter?

Right now, I'm tuning for no CAT, so your CAT life might drop accordingly.

It will be absolutely compatible.
However, there may be adjustments that must be made to your MAF calibration inside the tune to maximize power.

Here is the basic rule - if you car can run properly right now, it will only run better with the AccessPORT.

Will a tune for a high flow cat be available for those whose prefer not going to a mid pipe.
How much of a diference will there be power wise (in your estimation) between cat and no cat?

A tune that would not destroy my high flow cat would also be appreciated by myself...

slightly off topic, but this is the evidence that really had prohibited me from replacing the OEM intake... posted by Cobb on the Mazdaspeed3 section during their intake testing for that car

The dashed lines are traces from the RX-8 (left picture) and a 2004 STi with Stage2 AccessPORT programming (right picture) and the solid lines are from the MAZDASPEED 3. Notice how the dashed, green line from the N/A vehicle (RX-8 graph on the left) is flatter; demonstrating the stock intake system on the RX-8 is able to provide more than enough airflow for its motor. The solid green line is descending or tapering downward demonstrating that more resistance is being created as RPM increase.

Simply put, they measured the pressure in the intake box. If the box is a large restriction and can't flow enough air, the pressure will decrease as more air is being sucked out then sucked in (pulling a very slight vaccum). For our OEM intake, there is no fall off until way way out in the rpm band (off of this graph) and even then its supposedly minimal.

This is a reason the data logging will be very important to get a good tune for YOUR car. Too many variables for a one does all type of thing.

Either. Its up to you.
As far as which will make the most power the easiest, that would be the OE airbox.

Nice find BTW.

Bingo! The stock intake system FTW.

This is something that we need to make sure that you all understand. We spend literally months testing with our RX-8 and found that we had absolutely no reason to make an aftermarket intake for that vehicle. All of our engineers were of the same opinion that we could not make any improvements over the stock air box...none. No weight savings, no cost saving, very little if any performance gains; the stock RX-8 airbox is an engineering masterpiece that will promote laminar airflow across the MAF sensor, and should not be replaced if at all possible. With that said, please understand that ALL of our calibrations will be based of using the stock intake system. Running ANY aftermarket intake system has the ability to compromise the performance of our calibration and possibly compromise the engine. I am happy to go into greater details, feel free to ask any questions you may have. For our calibrations we will most likely just be supporting the stock intake system since it performs so well. We will most likely leave it up to other AccessTUNER Professional facilities to develop calibrations for their hardware. Although, please understand that the stock intake system works very well and I do not see any reason to replace it.

I am not trying to disrespect any intake manufacturers, I just want people to understand that an intake system is absolutely not necessary for the RX-8.

Take care,
Christian.

Christian, can you please explain the various tuning software packages, the costs associated, and the differences between each? Some people want a tune that works straight out of the box, but some enjoy to tinker with things or have a tuner that is not a member of your network. Thanks!

Now just so im getting this correct, any aftermarket intake including the Mazdaspeed/AEM one will actually disrupt my airflow?

Money sent.

This will be the best $700 spent on the car, capability and return-wise.
