COBB acessport SUCKS

Fckin serious?
An opinion is a subjective statement or thought about an issue or topic, and is the result of emotion or interpretation of facts.
Sounds like what you're spitting out about the COBB is your OPINION.
Let's see..
Naïve is a French loanword (adjective, form of naïf) indicating having or showing a lack of experience, understanding or sophistication.
Sounds like you..
We're wasting our time answering your question. We are correct, your claims are opinions, and very naive. Grow up, read our answers, or blow your engine.

hmmm i see ... well since you paid less for it then you can get the mm tune and it would end up being a similar price of what he offers to start with so that would be your best bet IMO

Just what I was thinking too.
RX-7s are drastically different to tune than RX-8s. MAP based vs MAF based. Don't know the difference? Go research.
You bought a COBB expecting a generic off-the-shelf-tune-designed-to-work-on-'any'-RX-8-without-causing-a-liability-issue-for-COBB-by-blowing-engines to work perfectly the first time. Shame on you. They won't get it better than the Mazda factory tune. Point blank TRUTH, not opinion.
Remember, the COBB is a TOOL, not a SOLUTION.
If you want to get full use out of the TOOL, you have to get a tune very specific to your 8. Every 8 is different, and they are very touchy about tiny adjustments in the maps. A tune good for 1 8 is usually terrible for just about any other 8. And to get a tune, you either have to go through MM, or find a shop that has experience in both MAF based tuning AND rotary tuning. Generally, this will mean that they are experienced in tuning the RX-8, but you might get lucky on another rare option. RX-7s are not MAF based, so the knowledge there won't carry over. Only basic rotary principles and math, but none of the details needed. Other than that, you can either learn to tune yourself or pay a shop to learn to tune your car. Your car is at risk either way, only one of them you will be without your car for a while and you will be paying alot of money as well.
And don't think I am trying to pump up the COBB. I haven't gone to a tuning tool yet, and I doubt it will be the COBB for other reasons. That doesn't mean that it isn't still an excellent tool.
I am just trying to reduce the stupidity quotient.

Remember the word "inherent"! If your RX-7 guy has worked on the RX-8 before, and produced good results, then by all means. Otherwise, let him know to be careful. There are several horror stories from people in this forum that went to their local RX-7 guy to get the car tuned, and ended up with crap.
And regarding your Stage 1 issue - a lot of people say the Stage 1 is the same as stock, or shittier. Cobb really didn't know what they were doing when they made that map.

no no no no no! I am not degrading your shop guy, but you must understand this : knowing how to tune the rx-7 does not inherently make you able to tune the rx-8

And fox, I don't hate your wheels, they LOOK great. But they're not functional, especially on a car with low torque. I have a 4-banger Mazda6 now, I popped RX8 18" 5-spoke stockers with 235/35 tires and noticed a slowdown in get-up-and-go. Stock size is 215/50 on a 17" Miata guys did physics calculations that determined for every inch in diameter you increase you need to drop 3 pounds in weight to have rotational mass stay the same. So if you get an 18" wheel of the same weight you still come out ahead.
If you want speed, the cheapest mod is to take all the audio stuff off and put stock wheels back on.
After that, a custom tune- just like the guys with a MS6 or MS3 have to do. They have more base maps because of their community and ECU, but you're in the same boat.

i completely understand what ur saying, i have not had to rebuild my engine yet , i run the **** out of it and it has 83000 on it.....so if he tunes it and screws it up thats just a good excuse to take a shitload of money out of the good ol' savings account and build a strong motor and (taking my lesson learned) find a well qualified shop to install and tune it
Just as long as you understand what RWWIP said - the Accessport is a tool. How you use the tool is up to you. This particular tool is excellent - for now, it is the best tool you can get for tuning the RX-8 (unless you have extenuating circumstances). The AP does NOT suck, the Cobb maps suck

The maps MUST largely be ineffective due to federal regulations. When you hire the proper person to tune your engine for "off-road/track-only" use, that is when you will glean the best performance from your RX-8.
Since MazdaManiac has provided something around 800 tunes/maps I am pretty sure you won't find anyone who has as much experience with tuning such a wide array of RX-8s around the country and around the world.

Why don't you just download the Race software and do it yourself? Tuning the Accessport is pretty easy once you get the hang of it. And if your buddy can tune RX-7s competently then tuning a naturally aspirated Renesis should be no big deal.

no, i love my car, i bought it bone stock and u can see i have put plenty of time into it. i just had a little extra cash and decided to try this "cobb AP thing " i can learn things very easily , i am a auto electronic installer formerly a mechanic with 2 years of formal training. so i decided to get it and learn it.....and honestly on this site if u post up stuff like i did u will get answers fast lol.....but i really figured u could do tuning on the computer straight out of the box and load it to the unit but i was WRONG WRONG WRONG, not denying that.......i guess i did more research str8 from cobb rather than on the forums and of course they will say what i want to hear and i believed them mainly because everybody talks so highly of cobb

AEM CAI
Running an aftermarket intake (like the AEM/Mazdaspeed) requires a custom tune. Cobb states this clearly in their Map Notes.
Additional Notes:
For use with a stock or very mildly modified normally aspirated 2004-2008 Mazda RX-8 MT only. Additional modifications such an drop-in replacement filter, underdrive pulley, and cat-back exhaust system are still within the acceptable parameters of this calibration. YOU MUST USE THE FACTORY INTAKE SYSTEM ONLY. NO OTHER AFTERMARKET INTAKES ARE CERTIFIED COMPATIBLE WITH THIS CALIBRATION. THE INSTALLATION OF ANY OTHER HARDWARE SUCH AS HEADERS OR CATLESS EXHAUST MAY ALLOW THE VEHICLE TO RUN LEANER THAN DESIRED, WHICH CAN CAUSE ENGINE DAMAGE.
