Damn an N version has been released

A dude on another thread stated he received the new N version. Is there no end?

Are these constant reflashes going to plague the stage1-3 project? Is there another way to go about it since they keep updating the ecu.

Also I am prob running version A because my a hole dealer wont reflash me. I have been to 4 of them. With a robot driving each car will stage one with the l flash beat the car with the a flash (or whatever damn flash I have)?

Thanks

Yesterday afternoon I got the very latest flash and it was a 2 part flash. PCM got M and ECU got another one, W?? something. The tech said the second part was necessary because my PCM version was so far behind.

Did it do anything? Totally different feel to the car. Shifting is better, starting is better, idle is smoother allthough somewhat louder and with a lower tone at the exhaust and cruising in any gear at 5000 and below is now bearable with a noticable kick in the butt dyno. Not a lot of diff over 5000, but it does feel much quicker, revs faster and the stock exhaust sounds a lot like the Borla at WOT now.

Steve at Joe Meyers in Houston gets good marks for this one.

Talking

I finally got the 'M' today too! Woohoo! I printed out the TSB that pretty much states that all of the RX-8s should be flashed up to the "M" calibration, regardless of what the car is in the shop for. They were cool with that.

I also told them that I was having cold crank conditions when I would run to the bank, then to the store, then to the gas station, etc. Which I was. It hasn't been too terribly severe, but it was noticable.

The new version seems to make everything run much smoother. I'm happy.

Go to the Tech Forum section, and read about the M Flash. Then go to Rosenthal Mazda's web site where they have posted all the TSBs - print off the M Flash TSB and highlight the part that says (essentially) "every RX-8 that has an earlier PCM version must be updated to the latest flash; no justification is needed, it should be done at the next service". Book a service appointment (oil change?), then give that TSB to the service desk, and just point out where it says it should be done and does NOT REQUIRE ANY PROBLEM.

Regards,
Gordon

Just got my M flash done at Tony March in Hartford, CT. I was the first at the dealership (thanks, guys for all the heads-up about the new flashes!) Took the tech a while, as he had to download all the new software off the internet and save it on CD's.

Just what everyone else said...a little more spunk at lower revs, and a little "brighter" throughout the rev range. Sure feels more like what the 250 HP might have felt like had we gotten it. :D

I got mine flashed today at Rosenthal in Gaithersburg. The engine is a bit more responsive, but I notice a bit more vibration/detonation from the engine. Is there a way to verify that latest PCM is N instead of L? Thanks.

You probably got the L or the M flash. Some dealers are putting stickers on the car indicating what flash is currently installed. The stickers have been found under the front of the hood, drivers side door jam... inside the cover of the ECU to the left of the battery. Go to the Tech Garage for more info.
Had the M done on Tuesday.... big difference :D ... smoother .... quicker revs .... more low end torque?

I can vouch for the "M" flash too. The update was done a few days ago and I can feel a difference as everyone else has.

The car, like "L", feels a lot better when shifting and I used to have this problem bogging a bit while shifting fast from 2nd to 3rd and that is vastly better. The car just takes off as if you had already shifted and mashed on the throttle at 5k.

I would recommend getting it done.

Thankx!

Ditto. Use the TSB and be polite, maybe talk to the Mazda service manager directly and you shouldn't have any problems. My dealer in DE was more than happy to do it for me. I love the better shifting!

I dunno.. I had my car in today for the recalls and asked for an update to M due to hard starts. I havent done a check to see if they did it, but my work order said they did. "Updated calibration to M - part # N3H6-18881-M" What was weird though, the tech listed on the work order that my car's calibration before the work was N..

Hmm.. how can that be. I bought my car in November 03 and I think it was built in October.. Was there even an N at that time? If so, would the dealer downgrade a car's PCM?? I brought in the TSB so that they would do it, but it got me wondering if they didnt care what current version I had and just blindly followed the TSB to put me at M.. hmmmmm

I just got mine reflashed (M) friday 4/23 here in vegas at courtesy mazda. The counter service guy didn't want to write it up but I insisted on talking to a service tech. Finally a serv. tech "Bert" came over and flat out told him that it had to be done. Car feels great. Thanks to whoever posted the service bulletin. Very helpful.

Got the 'M' 10 days ago.
MUCH smoother initial start,no 'dip' at 3000rpm,all-in-all a good update,imo....
Gas mileage improved 10%,to approx.17-18mpg,driving quickly and happily thru the city....

Btw,the dealer has been instructed by Mazda USA to DEFINATELY reflash EVERY RX-8 that enters their service bays to 'M'....if your dealer says otherwise they're LYING.
(Get a copy of the service bulletin and SHOW the morons,if need be.)
I usually include the Mazda USA TSB with my own
pre-written "work order" so they can't f*ck up.
(My dealership's a comedy of errors.....I could write a book.....)

guys,
I have been reflashed from K to L and I didn't like that one. I then got canzoomers 1.1 unit and it really helped but their wasn't as big a gain as I expected and there where hesatations over 6k. I then got the M and it woke the car up! Now the cz 1.1 is REALLY evident and much better gas milage! I did notice a little differance in L to M without the unit also. M was better. But I really believe the way to go is the M flash with the CZ unit.

Olddragger,

Your post is exactly what I've been waiting for: a direct comparison between L and M. Prior to your post, I don't believe anyone else has directly compared FIRSTHAND the two reflashes. Correct me if I'm wrong (and please direct me to other posts).

Well my friend it's like this. Bought the car in dec 03 and it was cool weak in the lower rpms but had a real kick above 5-6k. t was harder to start than `I liked and had some rough idle probs but liked that kick. Almost like a V tec feel. Then was upgraded to L with the airbag recall ( I have a good dealer). It had better start and low end response and smoother shifting. But the kick was gone and it had very noticeable less top end power. `I then installed cz's 1.1 unit and it really helped but i had mini hesitations in power above 6-7k. Noticeable. I then got the M flash and I wont give it back! I took cz's unit out for a day before upgrading to M. I missed it! I then took the car to the dealer and they flashed me to M in about 30 mins. I drove it and there was a big differance. Much smoother, got a little kick back at 7 k, thottle response in the 2-6 k range much sharper. I then reinstalled my cz unit and man! The car woke up! Gas milage better, starting better, shifting better and MUCH more power. Not a turbo mind you but you do know its there. Much better than with the L flash. I recommend it!

I have it from a good source, within Mazda, that as of this date, there is not yet an "N" flash. M is still the latest.

There is no newer version of "M." When a new version comes out, they rename it.
