e-Manage Install Problems

Here's a quick run-down on how I did my install. Right now it's just the default factory harness with the RX-8 RPM signal adapter. I took MazdaManiac's idea of using connectors so I found some at radio shack.

The A/F requires splicing so I cut that apart and wired in a pair of connectors. The connection tested good with the multimeter. I also tapped in the power, ground, and RPM lines. But I used these wire tap-ins instead of splicing directly.

Connected the A/F back up and closed the hood and everything ran. But problems happened when I plugged the e-Manage in. With the key turned to just the electrical on position I saw that the e-Manage was getting power. But when I actually fired up the car it started and then immediately died like how when it first starts the RPMS jump to around 2K and then settle down only the RPMS dropped like a stone and it cut out.

Another thing I've noticed is that sometimes now my car idles at 750 instead of the usually 900.

My thoughts on diagnosing the problem are that it could be:
1) Some bad connection with the RPM adapter.
2) Need to re-wire the A/F line (might've nicked off a couple strands of wire while stripping it for soldering).
3) Wire-taps aren't going to cut it and I need to go back in and solder up the splices proper.
4) Connecting to the e-Manage with the support software may yield some clues.

This only happend last evening so I've only just started working it out. Car still runs but I'd feel better figuring this out. Any serious suggestions are welcome.

Update

So I hooked the e-Manage back up tonight. First I connected via computer with the Greddy software. No error messages from the e-Manage and I successfully uploaded the CZ stage 1 map. When I fired up the car then same thing as before happened where it just died. I started it again and this time revved it up and when it came back down it settled into a normal idle. After taking the unit off again I had a CEL. The two errors code I received were:
P0102 - MAF voltage low
P0000 - no error code message or some such thing.

Any thoughts?

If you hooked it up from MM's directions I believe you will have to make some adjustments to the CZ stage 1 map - check with MM, but the way the CZ box is wired the rpm's come in on half scale and the fuel adjustments are positive to lean the ratio out instead of negative which is the way its normally done.

That may be your problem - I'm not really familiar how MM's instructions were done, but I'd guess he was hooking his up the more correct way. If that turns out to be the case, all you have to do is multiply the columns rpms by 2 and the actual values by -1 on the map. My guess is this is the case since the car runs without the unit hooked up (so your MAF line should be OK) and I got a similar code one time when I put a bad map into my unit as the greddy is adjusting your MAF readings.

I'm still having troubles with it off. With the ECU wired the old way with the plugs in my gas mileage has dropped like a stone. maybe 75% or 50% of what it used to be. That's unacceptable in my book. I flashed the memory of the both the NVROM and the KAM (starts with a "K", forget the name) and it doesn't seem to help. So I'm going to go in and remove the connectors from the MAF line, solder it back up as before, and see if that improves things. May be in the market to sell an e-Manage...
