ECU flashing - where do I start

ECU flashing - where do I start
After a month of fixing small things and a new transmission... Car will be on the road tomorrow with subie blue rims :D - and I want to try to get rid of my idle problems. It doesn't stall out or feel like it will, but the idle floats around 926-663 [used max min on my AP]. I'm thinking its a combination of the lighter fly wheel and the CAI... Possibly low comp engine but not seeing any real symptoms of that... I'd like to learn how to do some engine tuning for my own enjoyment and to see if I can fix my idle problems.
Just not sure where to go on the software side. I am extremely "tech savvy" [hate that term] and can do almost anything with a computer, you name it, chances are I've done it.
Tuts would also be nice if anyone has em!

Moved to the Engine Tuning subforum, and adjusted the title from "mapping" to "flashing"
Basically, since you already have the AccessPORT, download the software for it (Access Race Tuner I think) and you are pretty much good to go. If you watch the MazdaEdit thread, there is a lot of open discussion about what is in the ECU and you can pick up quite a bit.

I have searched and read in the tuning section about Cobb AP and Mazdaedit. Is there anyone that can do a one time flash on and ECU? I don't really want do extensive tuning but I was thinking about installing a 170 deg thermostat and BHR catless midpipe. As a result, it would require lowering the fan temps and eliminating the cat CEL.
What is the easiest and least expensive way to accomplish this?

I wasn't aware there were any up for share. And that's a bad idea anyway. There is too much variance between the cars. One tune won't work well for another, unless they are very conservative tunes. The only reason to use another cars is as a starting point for you own custom tuning session.

noob question.
just got a V1 unmarried cobb ap. im assuming i plug it into the car, marry it, see if they are any tunes left from the guy before me, and load them?
If not download the Access Tuner Race from cobbs website and then plug it back into the car? do i need any software on my computer for it to recognize the device?
sorry for the questions, i just got the ap with the wires/connectors needed with no instructions what so ever. looked at the sticky (at the top of this section) and felt like i ran into a brick wall.

If there is a Cobb Stage1 or MazdaManiac Stage 1, then yes you could load those. I highly recommend that you do NOT load any tunes specific to the last guy's car. Not all cars are the same and what was safe for him might not be safe for you.
Yes, download ATR from COBB as well. You won't need it to access the USB flaash drive part of the AP, but you will need it for doing anything else PC side. There is a firmware update tool as well, but I don't recall the name or where to get the updated version from.

The Cobb Access Port Manager is used to:
- Upload/download data logs
- Upload/download Custom Maps
- Download saved OEM_ECU.Rom map
- Upgrading the Firmware
- Installing the necessary USB drivers for the Cobb AP communicate to PC
This should work for the V1
Accessport Off The Shelf Maps <<--- actually links to latest AP-Manager software
Old Maps link --> http://www.accessecu.com/accessport/mazda/RX-8Maps.html <<--- Also has link on same page to old AP-Manager
ATR is used to:
- Create new/adjust ecu maps
- perform live data logging (not tuning just logging)
