How much potential tuning a stock 231 R-8?
#27
Ok then, you are correct, 190 is a number with an assumption being that it's healthy, as the numbers drop off from that quite quickly with known health problems, ~190 is with no known health problems, and higher than ~190 is always with non-stock modifications, even if it's just an item or two. The assumption has alot of support behind it, but I do concede that just because no one has ever posted a stock dyno higher than ~190, doesn't mean it's impossible.
And while exceptions are entirely possible, there is a certain point at which you have to begin questioning the measuring stick when it is a severe outlier in the data.

Well, they are both adjectives.
And you can certainly state a "typical" RX-8 is certainly not healthy. A statement I would agree with.
But you can also be factually accurate with an assessment using a "typically healthy RX-8" to describe a subset, which is what I am doing in this case.
In the end, you certainly may have a car that pre-mods, put out more than 190whp. It would certainly not be typical of even healthy 8s. So either the measuring stick is in question, or you are one lucky SOB. And I do mean lucky, since you would have to have a >190whp 8 without touching it, meaning you had no input or say in the matter, it wasn't something you were able to select by choice.
I would be curious if you actually did dyno your 8 before you did a single mod to it. I doubt I will get an answer to that however.

Merely providing counterpoint to your points trying to work towards where there is something to actually learn.
We each only have 1 engine after all (well, generally ), and in none of my posts am I saying that what you are saying is impossible, in fact agreeing with you on almost every point you make, and letting you challenge mine to adjust my thinking.
Too much to hope for that it would keep going I guess. Ah well.

Never heard about that company, are they really an experienced rotary tuner?
Best thing is to stay away from that offer.
Du är varmt välkommen till antingen svenska wankel registret eller rotaryheaven.net om tips på företag och alternativ för oss på lite nordligare breddgrader. =)

Eric Meyer, one of the more knowlegable posters on here, runs RX-8 race cars for a living. Even with heroic efforts (see exhaust systems), huge experience, and stacks of money, he's claiming 215 rwhp.

Check out the Racing Beat (also a group with vast rotary experience) website and read what they have to say about their own stuff.
Any non-turbo gains are very modest.
Chances of a local speed shop doing better = 0.00
Get a cat-back you enjoy the sound of, and a MM tune to make it run a bit sharper; sit back and enjoy the ride. You may wish to consider some of the reliability-related issues I tried to summarize here: https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-tech-garage-22/my-sneaky-plan-extend-engine-life-series-i-190372/

Hi guys,
First post here - so go easy on me!!
Owner of a 192ps Winning Blue 8 for about 3/4 months and loving it!
Just a possibility, but (here in the UK at least) dynos can be calibrated in wildly differing fashions. ie. what could be 200 rwhp on one could be 210 rwhp on another - maybe it just depends on how that particular companies dyno is set up?

Even properly calibrated, different dyno machine types can produce different numbers.
And any dyno can certainly be mis-calibrated.
A matter of questioning the measuring stick sometimes.
