You might get that message if you try to load new maps without loading the Cobb one as a 'base' first with a reflash.

(your mileage may vary, I'm drunk again)

Which Cobb one are you referring to? I tried loading all the Cobb ones available

Is the Cobb installed on the car properly?

I haven't actually put a tune of any sorts on the car as of yet, it's still stock. I was simply trying to read the maps on my laptop, connecting the Cobb to the laptop.

There aren't any specific instructions to get going here...is there a standard procedure to be able to open/edit the tunes?

Typically, accestuner race and an installed accessport should be all you need to view them. Unless you downloaded the wrong year, make, model tunes.

I am having the same problem. I am new to using this tuning system.

I connected the AP to my car and uploaded the stock style tune from my updated AP V2B. During this process it also downloaded the program in the ECU.

Once I did that how do I edit the correct base file in ATR and then upload the tune back to my 2004 MT?

Honestly,
I'm not trying to flame.
But if you can't figure that out you shouldn't be doing this, really, honestly, not trying to be a meanie.

I have a lot of experience tuning LS, LT and other PCM's. Some of these engines had over 600 rwhp and 600 rwtq. The above questions were specifically targeted to understand the file management part and were just basic things that are specific to the way the ATR and AP interface and the rules around which files can be edited. I was having some unusual problems that may not appear frequently. There are some slight differences in the way the map files are managed and the way ATR operates compared to the other PCM and E-PROM systems I have programmed. This is my first import and things are set up a little different.

I did figure out the file management part through trial and error. Most tuning applications have some basic guidance on the interfacing but the instructions I found online did not clearly stipulate how files are managed and what ATR is doing with the data files. Unfortunately, I guess my search skills are not good enough, and I was not able to find out the answer to some of these questions. For all those working on this here is what I learned:

1) The first problem I had was that no matter what *.ptm file I loaded I could not save it through ATR (even the cobb files). I ended up uninstalling and reinstalling ATR and that fixed this problem. It had not been used in a year and something was not working correctly.
2) I started with the Stock Style Cobb Map, edited the parameters and saved the file to my local hard drive on my laptop.
3) The other problem I had was with the AP Manager. Even though I tried to update it and it said I had the latest version, there appears to be a completely new AP Manager compared to the one I was using. So I also uninstalled my old AP Manager and installed the new version.
4) I then uploaded the *.ptm from my hard drive to the AP Manager and then within AP Manager transferred (uploaded) it to the AP.
5) Once it was on my AP I could download the updated map to the PCM. I was able to easily tell it was properly downloaded because I waited until the car reached the new fan temps and it worked as expected. The idle was also spot on to the modifications I had made.

I also surmise that within ATR it is using the *.dat files somehow. I'm not sure if that is the base map and the *.ptm I loaded is the working map. If someone knows the answer to this it would be helpful to clearly understand how the ATR processing works.

Thanks everyone for your help on this forum. It has been instrumentally helpful to keep my RX8 at the leading edge of it's performance.

The base map from cobb is supposedly supposed to be very very close to mazdas stock map, so if you noticed any changes from cobbs base map then it was definitely changes you made.

I also recommend that you might want to raise the OMP levels under load a tad bit, to me they seemed a little low.

I added 20% across the board on OMP values with a max value of 60. The cobb tables that I viewed equaled the values on my ECU OEM MSP 16 map.

thoughts on the catless?

read that here: http://www.accessecu.com/accessport/...1%20MTv100.pdf

got to there from here: cobb . mazda RX-8 accessport . map listing

So does this mean I can't use the Cobb AP with a catless exhaust? If so, no wonder I had issues. I am running the Cobb stage 1 tune and I have a turboxs catless midpipe and racing beat catback, and I installed my Cobb AP a day ago. I was driving today, and I got an engine code and I read it and it was: P2096 (Target AF feedback system too lean) so I don't really know what it is for and am hoping that there is a way to run the tune with a catless midpipe.

well If you had read anything in the forums. They all say do not use the cobb stage one. the car doesn't ahve any hp left on the table for a throw in tune. to gain anything at all it has to be a custom tune. Your exhaust won't hurt anything at all, but the cobb stage one might if you do anything mroe then light driving. The midpipe will cause you to have codes for no cat.

Oh. Well crap... Well, is there any other way to get a custom tune other than MazdaManiac? Other than tuning myself too...

You can find someone who does custom tuning or a shop that dyno tunes Cobb. I've come to find resources are limited in that. Most people stick to MM and his remote tuning sessions.

Well the thing is, I bought it used for $300, and I don't really want to spend another 300 for the tuning service

It will not come with a pre-loaded map (don't use the stage 1). You'll either have to tune it yourself or else have Jeff or another tuner (Kane, Brettus, etc) tune for you. Search around the tuning and major horsepower threads for tuning solutions.
If you have no knowledge of tuning, I recommend having one of the above, or a rotary knowledgeable tuner do the work for you.
And don't ask too many questions without doing some prior research on the subject...

What car year and trans do you have? Cobb technically has ended support for this. But if you call they should still have the software. It won't be for long tho. I have 2004 usdm manual if you need it

I called them they want me to pay to 150 for a class... I don't need a class to tell me how to tune a car... not my first time.

Its a CYA thing for them honestly. Its not all that bad you can skip and just take the test. Look at it as a way to get the software. I will say if you don't do it, or find another way soon you WILL not be able to get that software here in the near distant future.

The software is linked to your specific AP. You either needed to get the software from the previous owner or pay Cobb money to take the class. That's the current state of AP's unfortunately as far as I know. I tried providing my version of the software to another user here and it didn't work. If I recall correctly when I originally got my AP I had to contact Cobb with the serial number of the AP and they then sent me a link via email to DL the software.
