Midpipe and Greddy SP2 install

We did an install on the final design midpipe today, along with a Greddy SP2 cat-back exhaust.
The midpipe is one with no resonator, and we will do one with in a couple of days.
I need to do final tuning and some dyno runs on each setup as we go.
In the meantime these will start the ball rolling.

First off, the stock midpipe, with cat and resonator.

The Canzoomer/Random Tech midpipe.
2.75" mandrel bent stainless steel.
Bungs for installing the rear O2 sensopr and a pyrometer probe ar included.
This is the model with no resonator.
The cat is a separate unit, mounts to the front (left in this picture).

I will post pics of the version with the resonator in a couple of days.

The cat portion of the midpipe.

Pardon the pic, I will post better ones in a couple of days. This was taken under the car, pight was poor, and i forgot to turn on my flash for this pic.

It is equipped with a bung for adding a wideband O2 sensor and a front pyrometer probe.

This is installed already, and you can see the other peice of the midpipe to the right, with the rear stock O2 sensor installed.

My wideband sensor and pyro sensor probe are installed in the cat portion to the left of the pic.

The factory front O2 sensor is in the original downpipe, and is out of the picture to the left.

All of the units we are making have the cat on a separate piece with mount flanges, so you can change it out/remove it as needed for racing/riceboy use..

Total midpipe and cat assembly is 17 lbs lighter than stock cat/midpipe. The version with resonator is 11 lbs lighter.

Cat, Midpipe, and front portion of Greddy SP2 cat-back in place, sensors installed.
There is now 1" better ground clearnace under the car.
The old cat was thelowest point, and the rear O2 sensor hunbg out at an angle before. Now the sensor leads are tucked in, and the cat does not hang down.
The Mazda stock setup really sucked for clearances.

Now we install the Greddy SP-2 muffler section.
This is a view from the rear.
The silver things on each side of the pipe are the shields protecting the saddle gas tanks.

The original big Mazda cat, with the O2 sensor hanging out in the breeze, ready to snag and get ripped off.
What were they thinking???

All added up we shaved 30 lbs of weight off with this install.
Without the resonator this sounds a bit ricey/buzzy, but not too bad.
Street legal, but a bit loud on WOT.

I will mike the sound Thursday, then on Friday we are putting on the midpipe with resonator and i will mike that too. I will put the sound clips on our website.

One more shot of the SP-2 in place.

The stock muffler/catback weighs 52 lbs!!

This is 23 lbs lighter than stock.

Looks nice, wait for dyno. Life span on cat, warranty? The tips are pretty big. Looks like canoons pointed at the car behind you.:D

Price?

Maurice, looks great, and really appreciate the efforts.
I have been contemplating doing a cat/mid-pipe/resonator replacement, both for the weight savings, and because I want to eventually to to a Stage2/3 ECU tune.

But, I have to say, I really don't like the GReddy cat-back. Not my favourite tone from the sound clips I've heard, and those tips are just WAY too big... no way I'll have those sticking out the back of my car.

Will this midpipe arraingment bolt up to pretty much an aftermarmet RX-8 catback (I'm specifically thinking of Vivid's B&B) or is it all customer bolted together to only work with this exhaust?

I would assume not since you are just using an aftermarket exhaust, but I figure it's worth asking.

And on the oposite side of the wall, I love the tips on my Greddy. I thought they would be a bit too big before it got installed, but once in I really liked how it filled the space in so much better. It makes it look like that huge hole has a reason, to me at least.

I like the midpipe/cat with the bungs in place too. Sadly I am on the other side of the wall when compared to those with money, so I'll be waiting a while. However it will be illuminating to get the car on a dyno and do some actual tuning in the meantime.

Maurice, one clarification please.

If this midpipe is shortened so that the random cat bolts to it, then it is too short to completely replace the stock cat unless you used another short section of pipe in place of where the cat is. Correct? If so, will you be offering the short cat replacement pipe? Or, will you have a longer midpipe that runs the full length? Thanks...

Looks sweet... can't wait to see the pics of the whole setup with hf/ht cat, resonator, etc!

Big-*** tips... nice pair of tips... LOL! :D

Yay! Hey, that's the Random cat, right?

Do/did you put those cross straps back on then? (The ones at both ends of the oem resonator, in the first picture you posted here.) What are they for? Are they for safety, to catch it all in case the whole thing wants to come off the pegs in the rubber mounts? Just wondering, dunno, so I thought I'd ask...

Looks real nice & can't wait to see the numbers!

The cross braces stiffen up the car and did go back on.

There will be a pipe available to replace the cat only. If you put it on be prepared for a MIL!

No MIL from the Random cat setup as shown.

No Mil with my testpipe setup. All you need to buy is the Casper Electronics O2 simulator. The sole purpose of the simulator is to fool the computer into thinking there is a Cat in place. It does so by intercepting the signal from the O2 to the computer.

Wow.. I feel like we are starting this allll over again. We all were eagerly awaiting feel.. dyno numbers.. impressions of stage 1 and now we are in the same place again for stage 2. I am sure I can speak for all that we are dying for this information about stage 2 now.

Thankx a lot, David...

Thanks Red.
I like the Greddy as it is quite light, and well made.
Personally I like the sound, but with no resonator it is a bit louder than I like. I will be installing the midpipe version we are doing with the resonator, and will see then.
I am also getting sound levels and recording sound clips over the next few days.

The midpipe is designed to bolt up to standard cat-back, stock or others. It would be silly to do one that did not fit properly with stock, and all cat backs should work the same way, so fit is not an issue. The install only took an hour, and considering I have a lot of sensors and wires there that is pretty reasonable.

The Cat should do fine, as long as the car is tuned. The stock tune dumps too much gas into the cat, so is harmful to it. However on tuned I expect it to work out fine.

I will post more over the next few days.
Now I have to finish tuning for this, so we can offer that.
Midpipe, with cat and resonator is $598.
This includes all the fittings pre-installed for O2 sensors wide-band , pyrometer, etc. Cat is in a separate bolt-in section so may be removed separately easily.
Mid-pipe sold with the SR2 cat-back in a bundle is only $1,079
