Questions about COBB AP and installing a midpipe
Hi Guys,
I recently purchased an RX8. No stranger to the rotary community, as I am a 3 time RX7 owner.
I have been trying to gather information on the site about a particular issue, but am having a tough time getting some of the exact answers I'm looking for.
One of the things I plan to do to the car is the exhaust. The setup I'm looking at is the racing beat header, resonated midpipe, and catback. Likely adding the rev8 intake as well.
Anyway as we all know, once you remove the cat, you are going to get a CEL from the rear O2 sensor. I have read that the COBB AP has the ability to "disable" this code.
My question is this. What is the extent of this "disable"? The real issue is emissions. In the state I live, for an OBDII car to pass smog, they dont actually do a tailpipe test, they just check for a bad cat DTC, and then send you on your way. No visual inspection.
So if I use the cobb AP, I should effectively be able to pass emissions without actually having a cat.... is this correct?
One final question... can the cobb AP be used in conjunction with the pettit superchargers reflash procedure to disable the CEL for no cat as well?

The Pettit uses a different flash tuner...so they both can't co-exist at the same time....but a CObb could be used to make a tune for the SC....The Pettit flash tuner doesn't mask CEL's at this time
I think the Cobb will allow the unit to pass an OBD11 scan...but as MM to find out for sure if it will pass the driving mode tests

Yep - the AccessPORT turns off the DTC for the CAT (and anything else).
To pass emissions, all you need to do is drive the car long enough to set the readiness flags (a couple of days of normal driving will do the trick).
Of course, that is the least important thing the AccessPORT can do...

Perfect!!! The exact answer I was looking for.
I have one final question, If I were to do the mods that I listed above, is there ready made map for such a setup? Or are we looking at doing some data logging and fine tuning like your site offers?
If we go the tune route, what is the usual amount of time of going back and forth to get the car dialed in? A couple weeks?

There is no such thing as a "ready-made" calibration for the RX-8. Not if you want it to be optimal, anyway.

How much do you charge for a map? I have never used a AP but i have tuned several cars using a SAFC and items like that, is the AP very similar as far as adjusting the A/F ratio and certain rpms?

Information is here:

Not at all. It is completely different and WAAAAAAAY deeper than any aftermarket stand-alone system, let alone a simple device like the S-AFC.

Thanks for the information. From what i have read about it, it seems relatively easy to use. It maps and displays and lets you control so much more then the SAFC. Im assuming when tuning a N/A 8 would you basically shoot for the same A/F ratio's as you would for a normal N/A piston engine?

Right on MM, hmm.... I have alot of questions about the AP, and how everything works. Been trying to sort through all 200 pages of the discussion about it but some of it is burning my eyes...Plan on purchasing it in two weeks just wanna make sure its right for me and your PM box is full. Always is im assuming? Should i just go ahead and shoot questions off in the discussion guide? Lol... i'd hate to if they have already been answered somewhere in that epic thread.
