Racing Beat race reflash
#4
Racing Beat said it might work, but they did not know for sure. The dealer said if I bought a new ecu from them for 1400 they could make it work, but these can be bought on ebay for 100-150.
Jedi, can you elaborate on that some? Are the pinouts different? or just that part of the security system is not within the ecu itself?

the chaNGE HAPPENED LATE IN 05 if i havent completely lost my mind and should effect 06 models not 05 models.
the problem would stem from the anti-theft system. the dealer can do the swap because their hardware can make the new pcm get along with the car, however what Racing Beat would do is remove the anti-theft to make it work.

I would definitely get the ap if I thought it would work, I could not confirm that it can do anything that the racing beat flash does not already do. Racing beat says they can remove the security features from the 04, but not the 05 up. I also know that an 04 that has been flashed by them will work in another 04, just not sure if it will in an 05 up. Another thing that racing beat confirmed is that the pin configuration does not change from one year to the next. I am looking at a race car that was running a motec and does not have the original ecu, I don't want to run a motec so was hoping this could work.

the RB flash is great but to be honest, the AP gives you more options. The AP can do ANYTHING the Racing Beat flash does and in the hands of a tuner, they can even make custom adjustments based on your car's needs.
In my opinion: you can't go wrong with either one but for the money, I still feel the AP is a better buy. Racing Beat is 10 minutes from my office and I own almost all of their RX-8 parts but on this one, I opted for the AP.
What kind of race car? Now you've peaked my curiosity...

The ecu in unlimited, but it is not included in the sale and I can't handle the extra expense for such a minimal gain in output if any. The seller is an engine builder/tuner/racer and he advised against the motec based on the gains they saw over the racing beat unit. That is to say that after extensive tuning of the motec and many hours on the dyno they achieved some increase in peak hp but not enough to make it worthwhile.

Well I am going to find out if it will work, I have a 2005 car with a 2004 computer on the way. I will send the computer out for a flash and see what happens. I may call a couple more dealers also to see if someone would hook it up.

I know it may be a little late to add this, if so give us an update on your progress EBB. I thought I'd chime in a little bit here, I have a later model pcm, N3ZD, for my 04, works just fine, which makes me assume, to some degree, the pcms are not completely year specific. But some of the code to flashing them is, which I believe is the main hangup on flashing technique. Another thing of note is that I would also assume either the code for the immobizer changed after 04 or maybe to a seperate chip which won't flash with normal techniques which would explain why racing beat can't defeat it after 05. Back to the 04 pcm to 05 instead of an 05 to 04, it maybe more of a backward compatibility, rather than forward, if you catch my drift. Certain aspects seem to be nothing more than updated tunes from the factory, and additional code for added or updated accesories. I would assume the pcm would work with the proper flash installed. With all the being said, your dealer should be able to flash the proper vin, and current flash for you for a small fee, I think around 80$ depending on how long he takes. Then you could get a flashing tool and tune it yourself, which would be cheaper than an Accessport, and more customizeable than Racing Beat's. I hope that makes sense. I am a bit tired., okay, I am gonna backtrack now, why not buy an 05 pcm, and get it flashed at a dealer to stock, and then do the said tune, seems like the simplest solution, which has no uncertainty of working.
