Your radio presets still being in place means you likely did not succesfully reset the PCM.

Disconnect the battery again and stand on the brake pedal for a full 30 seconds (do not pump it).
Then, reconnect the battery and turn the ignition to "on" but do not start the car.
Turn the steering wheel full right and then full left.
Then, pump the brake pedal 20 times in [i]rapid[]i succession and then turn the car off again.
Then, you can start the car.
This will insure you are starting from zero every time.

Maniac, sounds like a good procedure except for pumping the brake 20 times and turning the wheel together. According to the TSB the brake pump has to done within 8 seconds, most likely not enough time to perform both at the same time.

The radio presets still being there have nothing to do with the Stage 1 install. You're just lucky. There is a cap. in the radio to keep them if you're quick. You are obviously getting better at plugging/unplugging the connectors. The switch will not affect the car if the engine is not running. It just bypasses the MAF (through the Stage 1).

The lights on the front of the unit are for power and programming info. I don't have the manual handy, but as long as at least one comes on you're golden.

The car is so smooth with this unit now, it's not surprising it's hard to notice. Check out how much quicker it is to speed!

So, how MUCH quicker is it, Dave? Any GTech runs, or dyno charts on the Stage 1.1 yet?

I thought you just got yours? To busy driving to notice ?

Dynos soon I hope. Just snowed last night again, so no G-Tech this weekend!

I installed mine last night and had very similar experiences as success07. After the installation, my presets were gone (it's because the battery gets unplugged, nothing to do with the PCM). The TCS light was on and DSC light was flashing, so I was confident that everything was working as it should. I took it out for a spin with my brother-in-law, and to be honest, I couldn't really tell if it was working or not. I was also expecting the punch that other members have mentioned but it wasn't there.

It took me taking it to redline a few times to notice how much faster it's getting to 9000 RPM. I went out again last night (this time with my sister and brother-in-law) and could still feel the difference even with an extra 300+ pounds in the car (my brother-in-law is about 180 and my sister is about 130).

Finally I took the car out this morning for some solo runs. I started with the unit on and drove a few short strips redlining up through 3rd gear. I then turned the unit off and did the same thing, then back on and the same thing (3 or 4 runs each time). The car pushed to 9000 before, but now it's leaping to redline.

I'm not one of the people that was severely disappointed by the RX-8s performance stock. I was happy with it then, and now I can't get that stupid grin off my face that I had the first few days in the car.

BTW, success07, you're right. "On" is with the switch towards the back of the car.

Actually, I've had my Stage 1 (not with the new maps) for a while now. What I'm looking for is the improvements between the new maps versus the old. I find the power "dips" of this current version I have pretty annoying - almost feels like I hit a HARD headwind for a second at each one. Some have described this as the car "falling on it's face" and I agree this is an accurate description. So, I'm looking forward to "Stage 1.1" results. :D

Rotomotor, I've noticed the mod seems to improve the more you drive it, almost like it "learns" how to run (a helluva lot better) the more you drive it.

I've noticed some "dips" between 2000 and 3000 rpm when the engine is cold...this didn't happen before installing Stage 1.1. It's a little annoying, but once the engine warms up the problem goes away.

Mine with stage 1.0 are more like at 4500 RPM and 5000 RPM. Definitely better when the car is warmed up though.

First - I installed the 1.1 with the battery disconnected as stated in the instructions. The first time around with the Stage 1, I turned on the car all my radio presets were gone and the clock needed reset and so on. This time around with the Stage 1.1, everything was still intact with no flashing DSC or TCS light. So I turned the car off, disconnected the battery and flipped the 1.1 switch back and forth a couple of times ending at what i think is the 'on' position. The '-' position which is toward the back of the car. Turned the car back on after connecting the battery and the TCS light was finally on as well as the blinking DSC light which I know is a part of the reset.

The odd thing is that all other presets are still there and unchanged. Radio, Clock, HVAC etc. Also there were two lights that weren't a part of the first Stage 1. On the Stage 1.1 there are two lights; the light on the left stays lit and the one on the right blinks. Is all this normal??

I also took a few drives to see if things were kosher. The fuel map is obviously different which was what CZ was going for with the update. Though I find it more difficult to tell whether anything has chaged from the stock setup. Meaning, when the Stage 1 was installed the first time, it had a punch at 5500 and 7500 that was quite noticable. Now everything is so smooth I have a hard time feeling the additional power. Can anyone else relate to this? Thank you in advance.

PS - I do not have the 'L' reflash or any other reflash for that matter.
I found the Stage 1.1 to be smoother as well, but I too had trouble telling a difference in power over stock. Because of the detonation issue that I experienced, my runs were kept to a minimum before I returned my unit.

First off: If the radio presets, etc., stayed, SOMETHING is SPOOKY!
You lose those due to lack of power to preserve them after you disconnect the battery. Did you take it RIGHT OFF THE POST?

Anyway, no harm done it seems.
It is probably safe to leave it on, actually, but for the 30 seconds it takes, why risk it?

As for the power it is smoother, and the change harder to detect as a result.
It is like when you get a faster computer, it often does not seem much ( if any) faster.
Now turn it off and compare.
It is usually easier to feel the drop (loss) of power compared to the gain.

Anyway, my GTech does not lie.
8 tenths to one second improvment in the quarter.

You will gain a tad more with the"L" flash as it is more optimized to that than K or previous.

Those dips are not from our map. We do not touch the fuel/air or ignition before 3,500rpm.

What we change:
3,500 up, adjusted fuel/air ratios.
Adjusted ignition timing

When cruise control is on, and at light to medium thottle we turn ignition advance up a lot. This is to help with fuel economy, mainly on highway. Moment you step on it hard, or tuen cruise off it returns to more normal advance curve.

Dips at 4,500 you saw bewfore on earlier Stage1 are oretty well gone. We spent a whole lot of time on that, smoothing out the curve.
Earlier versions only did the fuel, and at some points it was pretty hard to gain much without going too far lean. Hence the dead spots.
Now we are using fuel, but when we hit the difficult spots we make up for it with some extra advance too. At the very top we are actually a bit richer than before, but with more spark advance.

Final road testing was done on a bone stock RX-8, with the hotter leading (L6) plugs, as this makes sure that if it pinged we would have seen it.
Basically speaking, if you see ping now, it means you have spomething wrong with your car, or the fuel you are running is pretty bad.

I already posted these a couple of weeks ago:
https://www.rx8club.com/showthread.p...5&pagenumber=1

Not ideal runs as the road conditions were lousy, so I could only launch at around 3,000rpm, and even then it immediately spun the tires up to redline in 1st no matter what i did.

Even so, gain of about 8 tenths of a second over stock.
Once we get some better road conditions I will put my summer 18" tires back on and give here some fresh runs.

In the meantime I plan to go down to my friendly local DynoJet and get some new runs on that.
On the mustang Dyno we use for tuning I saw a gain of 27HP over stock, but the Mustang is hella conservative, so I want to post DynoJet numbers for a fair comparison.

This is normal. I posted a thread back in Dec in the Tech Garage as I'd been seeing the same thing. Turns out most everyone sees this on stock 8 at a cold start.
