Stock RX8 run against Stage 1 RX8

sorry, posted this in the wrong thread first time

just posted this on another thread but though it would make for interesting comments here. I have the good fortune of living in the same city as Maurice, so I was able to get a first hand comparison here with the stage 1.

I went out with Maurice & Cam on Monday night to test the new map for my car. We did some runs with my mod turned off, to compare against it stock. We found a stretch of road to do some good runs side by side. From a start, through first and second he pulled away easily, then as soon as we both went into 3rd gear, he pulled hard and was about 4-5car lengths before I gave up.

The power on the new map is soooo smooth, we turned it off so we could actually do a side by side comparison to see the difference.

Yesterday coming home from some running around, a young guy in a modded out Talon Turbo wanted to race from a light. The next light we came up to, the road was clear as we were in the west end of town. We took off, and I slightly pulled away in first and second, and in third gear I noticed he was a car length or so behind me before I back off to slow down.

He wanted to see the car, so next light he rolled down his window to chat. I asked him what mods he had done, and he mentioned Intake and exhaust, and something else?? but I couldn't hear him.

bottom line, in the 1/4 mile when we ran side by side it wasn't even close. He pulled hard and after shifting into 3rd, all I could see was his tail lights about 4-5 car lenghts away, and he was still pulling on me. So we are getting that 25hp or so extra from the mod. But Maurice is the man to ask all the technical stuff to, I am just lucky to live so close to get to do this first hand.

We did a few runs, just so I could get a feel for the mod. I just got the lastest update for the "L" flash this week, and everything so far seems to be great.

With the Racing Beat ECU -- what are you going to do every time Mazda releases a new "flash" -- park your car for a week and ship the ecu back Your dealer will wipe-out the Racing Beat info -- or simply not cover the flash under warranty since you modified your ECU program.

What wheels was Maurice running? If he had his winter tires on that would account for at least part of the improved performance, as they have a lower rolling radius and thus give lower gears.

I don't see how he could pull 4-5 car lengths with only 25hp difference... either he's a much better driver, or is running smaller tires + other mods.

Just my $.02,
Aaron

You are correct Maurice has lighter tires and rims but I can't recall exactly.

EDIT:
I found this post:
================
canzoomer
Stock wheels are 21 lbs each.
17" decent, not too expensive wheels are 17 or so.
Savings: 3-4 lbs.

17" tires are lighter than same model 18 by around 3 lbs each.

Total per corner: 6-7 lbs.

He also states a 8lbs. per wheel difference farther down in the thread. Just the mere fact of removing 32lbs of unsprung weight from the car will help performance.

sorry guys, he did have his summer tires on. And when we turned my mod on I ran behind him about even, so driver difference is minimal. He has the modded exhaust remember, but it did not really make a big difference when we both did a run together (both mods on).....he pulled away very very slightly.....in fact I was on his bumper the whole time right behind. But there was a little advantage to his car.

as far as car lenghts go, I was estimating. It could have been 3 or so? but he kept pulling away. In the 1/4 mile it would not have been close.

You really notice it when we were both shifting into 3rd, then his car pulls away easily (this is the run with my mod off to compare).

It was fun, and very interesting to see the difference.

oh and one more thing guys, this was a very accurate comparison because the map he downloaded onto my car was the same one he has now on his. So other than exhaust, which I stated he has modded, we both ran summer tires, and are pretty close in driver shifting.

I got a little more aggressive after a few runs.

we also switched cars so I got in his, and he drove mine with the mod turned on. I followed my car driving his, and the power was about equal as it should be. When he followed me he did drive a little more aggressive possibly, and was on my bumper, but with the exhaust mod he has, it was not an overly noticeable difference....but like I said, it did give a very slight advantage to his car (were talking side by side difference with him maybe a 4ft in front of me if we ran it out?) just a guess, but cars very close with both mods on. With mine off. On a side by side run, he pulled in first and second, then the big push came when we both shifted into 3rd, then he pulled hard away.

We did about 5-6 runs I think?? We played around for a while.
Switched cars, turned my mod off, ran them both on side by side etc.

sorry, almost forgot. When We both ran with mods on, and I followed him, Cam was in my passanger seat (he is a solid guy, about 250lbs?)

So basically the advantage I think was due to exhaust might still be there, but not as much had it just been me in the car. Who knows?

When I turned my mod off, and ran beside him, it wasn't too long before I saw his back bumper.

Wow, very interesting.

I assume this was "Professional Driver, Closed track" so we don't have to warn about street racing stories not being allowed. :D Seriously, the 8 vs 8 comparo is in the interest of science and totally legit IMHO, but let's please avoid talking about competition against, ahem, any other challengers.

Thanks! Great stuff!

Great stuff, thanks. How easy did the download of the new maps to your unit seem? Fumbling minds want to know.

To program the unit it takes about 10 sec. You select the file, then select "write". Pretty simple.

Point and click

I'd thought perhaps the car would have to be on a battery charger and would require turning ignition on and off at particular times, etc., like the Shark Injector product for Bimmers. Point and click sounds good to me!
