**new paint**

I just need some imput from some of the experienced 8 owners / bodyshop and owners, painters on the forum to help me realize the cost of a project of this type.

If you don't remember a member recently did an amazing job on a 2-tone paint job, now his car if I recall properly was a silver, so he had to paint both the white and black but what would the cost be if I already had the base colour (the White pearl) for example in this case and needed only the black?

O ps... sorry for the plagiarism just couldn't find the link again.. :S

Hopefully I can get a better idea, and understand more about painting and the work required to make it look right,

thanks again everyone!

Spencer

1. That is a GORGEOUS car!

2. Paint wise......the cost will be determined by the shape of the paint you already have on it. You don't want new paint laying against paint that needs work. I have spent the last 3 months without my car because although I only had a body kit put on it, I had very minor hail chips that needed to be fixed. I ended up just repainting the car. I was quoted about $4K to repaint, plus 1800.00 to paint and install the kit....That is HIGH, but it would have been done in a few weeks.... I'm getting it done by another painter that is just as good, takes his time, and will do it right the first time....That is the most important, and I'm paying about half the price......How patient are you?

haha real patient, i would like to think my paint is in excellent condition but obviously as you can probably tell I'm no professional. Price is one of my largest obstacles, I figure I will have to put it on the back burner for abit.. especially if it exceeds 2000

o and a generic question for anyone? what makes like a bad paint job like a cheap maaco or something? Just crappy material and not clean lines or what?

Spence, o and thanks for all your help already,

honestly, I think $2k is way too high. I think about $750 for a two-tone job will be about right. I paid (at different times): $180 for the black on my hood/front bumper. $250 for the roof and door pillars. $100 for spoiler. $100 for trunk. Total of $630...and it's a freaking good job. You just have to find that body shop that does sick work for a good price.

Auto paint is like residential paint. There are different grades.....EX: If you go to Lowes and buy their brand you'll get a watery mess, but if you go to Benjamin Moore....you get a better quality of paint.....Same with Auto Paint. IIRC PPG is about the best there is on the market...I know Mazda uses it from the factory. I checked....

There are better and worse grades.....to do a two tone, from the main car line down 360 degrees will have to be taped off and covered...wheels and all, due to over spray...Before that is done the area to be painted has to be wet sanded, to get all the little bits of trash out of whatever clear that there is, wax off, all of it, so the paint will adhere...that in itself is labor intensive. Black of course is the easiest to paint and the easiest to spot if there is trash in it. you are looking at at least 3 coats of just paint if not 4, plus at least 3 coats of clear. Mine has 4x4...If it's done correctly the line between the white and black will need to be scuffed a bit before the clear to get that smooth surface between the two. If not it will feel like the edge of a sticker..not good.....

DISCLAIMER: I am not a painter, nor an expert, but I watched my husband do this for 8 years in his own shop.

You will pay more for the labor than you ever will paint....especially black.
