Aftermarket Taillights Info/Questions

There's nothing wrong with the tail lights.
What's wrong,? Need a big light saying RX8?
Maybe someone could find some with red and orange lens, to match those orange side lens the US seems to get.
C'mon - the rear lights are beautiful and the lights at the front are a work of art.

why on earth you would want to switch out the taillights is beyond me. I have yet to see another car that has those little LED lights on the edge of the lights. They are so unique that I see it ridiculous to change them.
This ain't a Civic. No need to change them.

chrome
I'm just not a huge fan of the clear outer plastic, and then chrome underneath surrounding the actual lights.
Acutally, the stock lights look like lame ricer lights to begin with.
What happened to normal, no glitz lights? I just want something that doesn't scream flashy when the rest of the car isn't.

i like the sock units, s'pecially the turn indicators, but if someone else doesn't, fine.
as far as aftermarket tail lights, i dunno if there'll be good, quality units that don't look even more flashy and chromed than the sock units...

The only offense of the rear lights is being rather generic and Miata-ish, IMO.
The only thing on the back that I simply do not like is the dull black plastic. Heh, I really didn't even notice it when I bought the car, the rest was so alluring! But now it bugs me. The black plastic on the front and mirrors can be easily fixed, but I haven't seen a kit yet which banishes it from the back. The Mazdaspeed kit for example--I can barely tell it from the factory rear end.
If someone wants to make a good-selling body kit, concentrate on the rear. Ideally giving the rear of the car the same Italian flavor the front of the car has (esp. w/ the appearance package + rotary accent package). Keep it smooth and elegant, without adding a half dozen ugly scoops.

Re: chrome
I haven't taken any of these apart, so I'm only guessing, but what if you took the stock light housing apart and covered the chrome part with...something? You don't want it flashy, so I'm guessing carbon fiber film is not your cup of tea...but maybe some of that black adhesive vinyl, or possibly just paint. It would definitely dim down the chrome look. Of course, even if you ultimately would prefer paint, I think I'd try it with something temporary first!

Look at this lights carefully, it's almost a piece of art. Not many production cars have a set of nice taillight like the 8. What ever you're looking for got to be really really outstanding to beat what the 8 have got.

I'm not a big fan of the taillights either. I think most ppl that feel that way have been long digusted by the overabundance of altezza (aka jdm is300) taillights on civics and such.
How the S2000 keeps it pretty subtle is something i like.

tail lights
sorry if repost, but can't remember a previous post. has anyone thought about maybe tinting the tail lights...or something...they're a little to altezza-esque for my tastes. so now i sit here broken hearted, paid a dime and...oh i mean i'm sitting here thinking and i've come up with some options.
1 take the assembly apart and tint the plastic cover
2 take it apart and paint all those chrome parts black
2.5 paint those lil chrome parts body color =p (now that i visualize this it really looks tacky in my head)
i could settle tinting just the cover, but those 2 l'il led's on the sides i really like and they're not particularly bright.
anyhow just thinking out loud, wondered if anyone was in the same boat as me. let's go fishin'!

Sticking with OEM myself - I think they look great and roll very well with the rest of the car. Please post pics if you ever change them. Always interested in what others will do with their ride.

what don't you understand
some people like myself dont want our rx8 to look like everyone else's
By putting aftermarket items on our ride we create something different and unique
