Any idea to turn off lights automatically?
My Mits. Eclipse has an useful option,- when I turned off engine and opened the door, the lights came to off too, and on when I push the key to ignition. Very useful option I used to. Any experiences to make it for our RXs?

Wire a relay into the ignition wire that only allows the lights to be on when the ignition is on.
Then when you shut off the ignition..the lights go off. And when you starrt the vehicle...with the light switch on....it will turn them back on.
Some market cars IE: Canada..have daytime running light modules that turn on the lights when the car is started......this is kinda like that...in reverse :
I'm sure you could wire the module that controls the lights in your Mitsu into the RX-8 as well. I guess Mazda didn't think that it was an important option?

I had that feature in my Mazda Tribute.... It is actually simple and should be in the RX-8.
About a year ago I did a DIY for Powered sunroof. It was to keep the sunroof powered for a couple of seconds after the key was removed. The same principle should be easily implemented for the lights. I might try to do it in the future.

Perhaps Omicron or Magnesium will chime in... Lurch519 might know how
to do this?
I'll shoot them a PM.

Direct from an expert "Lurch519"
Here's a copy of the PM Lurch sent me:
ok, its very easy.
remove the under dash trim
remove metal under dash piece
remove shroud around steering column (3 screws from underneath)
plug on the ignition switch, locate this, find black/yellow wire and tap into this
find white plug, closest to steering wheel, on the left, locate the yellow/red wire, there are 2, it should be the one on the left of the plug, it will go to ground when the head lights are turned on. tap into this one
locate the light green wire in this same plug, this is parking lights
get a directed 8616 relay from your local specialty retailer, should be 5 bucks, and 2 1 amp diodes
on your 8616 relay, connect the yellow and black wire together and attach to ground
cut the orange wire
take the red wire and connect it to the black/yellow ignition wire
take the brown wire, attach both diodes to this, with the stripes toward the wire. the opposite ends of the diodes will go to your headlight wire and parking light wire. test before crimping this as i just did this, but i am typing this from memory. if it doest work, try reversing the polarity on the diodes
this should be it, test by turning key on, if headlights and parking lights go on we are good.

Very cool. I might have tackled this at the underhood fuse box level, but this way should work too. Now all this needs is someone to take it on. I have no time and its way too cold right now in Colorado to tackle this.
Al, you're motivated, care to tackle the "Lurch method" you just outlined, and assuming it works, make it into a formal DIY? C'mon man, get your name in lights!
I'll leave this thread in place till we see one way or another, altho since its not yet a tested DIY I'll put a pointer in the DIY forum and move the thread to the exterior forum.

Thanks... but, no thanks. I'll leave this DIY up to the pro, Lurch519.
I am just passing on the info. I probably would have shot for the Fuse panel in the
engine compartment too.

Hmm, I'm sort of torn about the merits of this.
I traded in a `95 Subaru which simply killed the lights when you turned off the key. I left them in the on position all the time (day-time running lights by day, eh?) and never worried about forgetting to turn them off or running down the battery. At first I really missed this when I got my RX-8 because I tripped the headlight warning chime all the time.
However, when I did want the headlights on to use the car as a big flashlight I had to put the key in the ignition and make sure I didn't lock the key in there..... hard to say if I really prefer that now.
Is there a wiring diagram somewhere in the DIY fog light rewire thread which would show the proper wires so this could be done under the hood like the fog light rewire?

I had a Peugeot with auto lights and auto wipers. Now, I forget to turn on the lights (Is it my eyes or is it dark out there?), then...behold the beep. The wipers, keep running long after the rain has stopped.
