carbon fiber look????
Does anyone know of a carbon fiber look overlay for the hood. I don't want to spend big money, plus I will be making a split hood and real carbon fiber won't work.

The so called "real" carbon fibre hoods aren't even fooling anybody. All fibreglass, with a couple layers of carbon around the edges for appearance. No wonder they weigh more than stock. Don't do it, it's going to look terrible.

Not to get off topic, but if there is one thing on the 8 that does not need upgrading it's the cars looks. Carbon Fiber is not going to lose you weight on the 8, so why bother. Unless of course you like the "rice boy" look.

i don't think carbon fiber hoods are rice at all. If you go to japan most of the tuned cars out there are sporting carbon fiber hoods. I got mine for looks cause the CF hood and stock hood weigh about the same.

I think that's uncalled for. Keep that type of comments off a great site like this one.

well no tto step too far outsie my mod responsibilities but- doing to your car somethign that LOOKS like it adds performance even though you know it DOESNT is actually the definiton of the term "rice" as used here.
so to use carbon fiber- its function being to make parts that are lighter than stock for a performance benefit- to make part that is not lighter, and could be heavier, solely for the look of it would be rice. and who ever said its not rice because all the owners of cars in japan do it? thats laughable, really.
*the opinion expressed in this post is soley that of the poster and does not reflect in anyway the opinion of the RX8Club forum, its management or owners. thank you*

the carbon fiber vynil that you can get doesnt look anything like carbon vynil, at all.
if you really want the look with little price, just wrap your hood in the CF cloth and slap on some urethane, it will look much better than vynil and wont be as much as a real CF hood.
even getting a REAL CF hood ( i like the look of 'dry carbon fiber' ) you save very little weight over the stock aluminium hoods that the RX8 and MX5 have. if you want to shave weight, cut all the underbracing off the stock hood and run hood pins, cuts the hoods weight in half. I did it on my miata, it was lighter than the lighets CF hood I could find ~6lbs vs 8lbs for CF.

I think I know what you're trying to do. No offense but he IS going for the rice look. In a good sense that is. Split hood, opens from the middle like doors, you can see this often in car shows. It does look really nice. But however, you'll be actually be better off cutting a carbon hood then your own hood. I think it is always better to keep your oem things laying around just in case. Another reason being that if you don't have a black car and open up your hood it would look kinda funny.
BTW: Give the guy a break. At least he is trying to do somthing different for his 8. We all do things that isn't always performance. Maybe he wants to show his 8. I've had a good amount of carbon work while I was being trained as an aircaft mechanic and I think he completely sway away from wrapping his hood with carbon. If he doesn't have enough skill with carbon, the weave would look really bad afterwards. Some other reasons being that bubbles could form because of the contact, or the carbon could warp.
Do your thing 10K, whatever floats your boat.
