Not to try to hijack this thread but RMagic, what is the name for those side view mirrors (in picture) with the turn light built in them? I know there's the Au-to Bahn side mirrors but those have 2 prongs to connect back to the car.

I think the only reason people frown upon it is because it's completely unneccessary and is an expensive modification that is only visible for the 4 or 5 seconds that you're getting in or out. Among the street racer types, unless you've got a monster of a show car, adding weight to your vehicle for 3 seconds of showoff time is practically throwing your money away.
I'm doing it because nothing on the 8 is "normal" except for the driver and passenger doors, and they just seem out of place to me.
I'm big on catching people's eyes with my car, but not by buying kits, stickers, paint, wings, or any of the other common "ricer" methods. On the move I'll look completely stock, so I'll avoid unwanted challenges & attention while driving, but at meets and around friends I'll get a nice "oooo! ahhhh!" moment. I've got the money to spend, and if I don't put it towards unique doors, I'm sure I'll find some other equally pointless thing to spend the money on like a third computer or another HD TV.

...Plus I'm getting tired of kicking my door speaker EVERY. SINGLE. TIME I get out. The thought of getting that door out of the way without having to leave 4 feet of clearance between me and car to my left makes me quite happy.

Then I'll rephrase it a bit. I used to own an '00 Celica which had a ton of money dumped into it for show-purposes. I never had lambo doors myself but I did know of 3 other Celica owners in my immediate area who did. One of which had a completely stock Celica. The second one was stock until buying my bodykit when I was parting out my car. And the third was actually full-show.

I will say that I've yet to see an 8 with lambo doors but I see it on other cars all too often, especially amongst the Celica forums and it began to get old. Much how altezzas came and went in style!

OK - I've been gone for a while and I'm while I'm impressed with the photoshops, I'm not happy that the thread got hijacked because of misunderstood intentions.

You dont want lambo doors
I never said that. All I wanted to know was if there more choices than stock & lambo. I like the way lambo doors and wouldn't mind having them. However, if there's something a little less over-done, I'd like to see it.

you dont want it to be visable when driving
I'm not sure how this got on your list of stuipd criteria. A closed door is a closed door. The fact that no one could tell when I was driving should go without saying... unless I drove with the doors open.

you don't want it to add weight
I could give a damn. I don't drag. I don't track. I don't autocross. As long as it doesn't had such an obscene amount of weight that it affects my daily driving habits, I'm a happy camper.

and you want it to be reliable
Once again, I'm baffled as to why this is considered a stupid request. Who the hell says "I want a door that will stop closing correctly after 2 months and cost me thousands of dollars to have half-assedly repaired each time."?

Perhaps I should start again - I'll use smaller, easier to understand words this time:

I'm thinking about getting different doors. The only alternative I know of is Lambo-style doors, but I don't know how much they cost, or where I could go to get them installed - could anyone here give me a price estimate? If you're in the Houston area, know of any respectable shops that I could trust with the install?
Also, if you know of any style door other than the Lambo ones, could you post pics/prices for them as well? Thanks!

Actually, that does sound pretty neat.

The biggest problem would be engineering it so that you wouldn't have an ugly *** mini-van track grove down the side of your car AND not have huge hinges eating up all the space inside your car. Further complicating things would be safety, seems like you would need to cut into the rear door frame which could compromise side impact safety.

Then try to keep the weight down, and I might be in. XD

It would definitely make the dance when filling all 4 seats a lot easier.

Probably to avoid the mini-van track groove. Inside the body would likely add more weight and sacrifice body rigidity(after all you could have a support there instead).

CF hood saves you 7 lbs. Most people do it for looks since they often add several lbs of stereo equipment. Though some do it as part of a larger project to cut weight. Cut 7 lbs enough times and you can end up loosing enough to be noticeable.

Lambo doors seem very ricey to me. Also, very wannabe. Not to mention opening and closing them seems to be an annoying production compared to normal doors.

Our doors do weigh quite a bit.

CF doors only drop 7lbs? Is that each?

If I was to do scissor type doors I would go with what Mazdamaniac has.

From what he has said it takes some fabrication but they are made quite well.

It is recommended to get the 90 degree style hinge because it is much easier to get in and out.

"mini van" rear doors does sound like an interesting idea... if anyone could photoshop the general idea I'm pretty sure many would appreciate being able to see that...

Some reason, after reading this thread, I cant get the idea of Delorean style doors...
any thoughts? lol

A good CF hood if it's light weights ~7-9 lbs stock hood weights ~15 Lbs.
Not some hoods could end up weighting more so be careful.

Taken from the "Weight of Stock RX8 Parts" thread.
https://www.rx8club.com/rx-8-racing-25/weight-stock-rx8-parts-81791/

CF doors would save a lot more weight, but you would need to add something like a steel tube role cage or some other reinforcements to make it safe. I think one thread quited it at 200lbs saved.

DeLorean style doors would require a TON of fabrication work. With lambo and scissor doors you still keep the hinge in the same location - all you've changed is how that hinge functions. DeLorean doors would require moving the location of the hinge.

There are also hydraulic pistons required to hold the door up once it's been opened. Unless you were to cut a groove into the ceiling of the car (this would also require cutting the FRAME), those pistons would be located where the head of anyone taller than 5'1" rests. But even if you did somehow manage to safely cut the frame away to relocated the hinge towards the middle of the roof, and you found a place to mount the hydraulics without sacrificing head room, the stock doors aren't designed to hold up their own weight at the top of window (where the new hinge would be)

DeLorean doors would require months of freetime, thousands of dollars in fabrication tools, and an engineering degree.

Actually, your idea has been used in the "Street Tuner Challenge" on Speed TV last year. The final episode, the two teams were given a brand new 2006 Honda Civic Coupe, one of the used the sliding door idea and it worked out well. Therefore, I can see your idea apply to your RX-8.

meh, shave your handles and weld the rears shut?
This thread is confusing to me, "no bodykits as they are for looks only".......then....."i want different doors"? At least a properly fitting/designed kit does offer some degree of function, playing with the doors seems pointless to even a customizing enthusiast like me. You'd be better off spending the $ on making the car more fun to drive or more enjoyable in some other way (i;e-stereo etc.) my opinion anyway, knock yourself out whatever you decide

do you remember how they did a sliding door? I'd like to see this concept as well.
