Door? = Done...

So on thursday... Just before one of our school dances, guess whos door got smashed in?

Yep, mine.

It was Sadies so we were all inside with the group making our shirts and everything when one of the kids walks in and says, "dude someone just ran into your car..." I just laughed and kept decorating because that's happened to me three times now and it was just a trick every time.

Well...

Just a second later the dad of the house walks in and says, "Whoever owns a really nice silver car needs to come out here because your car got hit."

So... Out I went and sure enough, there it was. An '01 Camaro bumper stickin' into my driver side door.

The only way it happened was it was in one of those cul-de-sacs that has parking in the middle. She parked in the middle and I was on the curb so she backed straight into me.

I gotta say though. I felt bad for the girl. She was crying and her parents were yelling at her and everything... Tough luck.

My question is... Does $1500 sound about right for repairs?

What was the extent of the damage? Just the door? Fender? Which door? Did it affect the bottom portion of the car?

I'll post pics tomorrow when it's not dark.

...But it was perfectly in the center of the door and it's not repairable.

One quote said $1,700 and the other was $1,435.

As far as I can tell, it's just the door but apparently they have to repaint the surrounding areas also so it blends well.

If they have to repaint an entire side (or a large portion of the side), you can expect the painting to be anywhere between 500-1000 worth of work.

Unfortunately I cannot find prices of new doors online. I see a few used ones going for around 600-700, so I guess the estimate seems right.

Oh okay...

The cheaper quote managed to find a skin (somewhere online) and the more expensive one only found a shell.

Would it be a good idea to get a set of carbon fiber doors?

Like one of the previous thread earlier on carbon fiber or FRP door replacements, don't do it if it's your daily drive and not for track since those doors won't give you much protection in case of a crash and it will also reduce the rigidness of you whole body frame...maybe handling might suffer a little. So safety first go with the OEMs door find weight reduction somewhere else, like the driver and passenger side seats.

Oh okay I understand... I'm not even worried about weight reduction or speed... I was just wondering if they would be a better decision since you can get a pair for about $1200 and you don't have to pay for it.

But it looks like he turned it in to Farmer's. I knew there'd be no way he could pay for that up front.

Sorry, no pictures yet. Maybe tomorrow if I find my camera.

BTW: Is $150 the cheapest price for the Metra single din dash kit?

I'm just glad it wasn't a hit n run.

That'd suck.

Again, is $150 the lowest know price for a metra kit? (new)

Are your pics resized to a relatively small format?

Haha nooo.... But remember, this was before a dance so I'm not %100 sure how my own date would fly with that.

Unfortunately for you silver is the worst color to repaint/match (tied with gold). Make sure the paint matches from every angle when you get it back.

Yeah I know... However they are going to blend it and it's my uncle's shop so if they don't do a good job I'm calling him out on it.

Not sure where you work, but 1500 for a whole car is a Maaco paint job...

Cutting/replacing the door skin + bodywork + proper prep + paint = $1,500 is a fair price

i got hit right in the middle of both of my driver's side doors. cost was $3300. so 55-65% of that sounds about right.

Haha no... It needed a full new door because they don't sell a skin for the driver side and the door was too weak to repair safely.

I got it back today! And I must say it looks incredible. The paint was blended extremely well and you could never tell anything happened.

I'm extremely pleased with their work. They even got it done a day early

That was a good find... But how many professional repair shops are going to participate in an auction for a door skin that may or may not actually be brand new?
