Yeah and at almost $400 worth of aluminum, Mazda should have thought of that.

That really looks like overkill to me. I have seen someone on here dummy up a 3-strake option, which looked pretty good, but 4 just makes it look too busy now.

I don't really care for 4 either, but to be fair, it might look nicer in person.

How about 16 strakes per side? Be almost like a mega-billet grille, only for the sides. :D

That is the dumbest thing I've ever heard. 12 strakes per side is the absolute maximum one should be allowed per side. Any more than 12 and it becomes overkill.

That would be me....did this before and thought about anodized strakes on a red 8. The original in this pic was titanium gray.

D MENAC 7, have you thought of the idea of making a side vent with strakes that doesn't involve the mesh part? I was just think that I have seen some cars that have an open space in designs like that, rather than a mesh so you can't see inside. What gave me the idea was a DIY photo that was taken that showed the car when the vent was taken off, and I was trying to imagine what it would look like with the strakes there without the meshed vent...I think if it were possible, the outer part of the vent would have to be there, and then the 2 areas where the strakes go would have to have a solid piece to go across, but beyond that it would sort of look "open".

What do you think?

I have a mock up of what I thought would look fairly good that sort of describes this. I am not a big fan of the plastic mesh on our 8s so I thought about the side grilles and contemplated a change. Here is what I came up with. I thought it might be a good idea to turn the rear area of the vent inwards just a bit and put screening at the front of this vent just behind the wheels.

Ok, ok, let's compromise and agree to 14 per side.

:D

No, 12 is the most it can have. To try to go over that number is like repainting your car with a crayon. It just doesn't work.

yeah, that's sort of what I was thinking...would it even be possible to have it without a mesh at all?

Dunno why not? The biggest problem is there are those two supports that are in the fender which are slightly lower than the strakes. These get in the way. However, if the strakes were moved down and this were taken into account...I did something on photo shop on that not too long ago and do not remember where I saved it at or perhaps I didn't save it. Will have to find time to look at that again.

Lightbulb

Since the side strakes are all the rage now, has anyone thought of different shaped strakes? I have ideas about the shapes they could be but after my pathetic attempt to draw them I gave up. But anyway, I was thinking of say, flame shapes or lightning shapes, or other things like that. Perhaps someone with some skill at photoshop could whip up a couple drawings. I have no idea what the end result will look like, it could look like crap or be completely tacky. I don't know till I see it on a car. But hey, at least it is an idea...
