front air dam functional?

Does it have any aerodynamic functionality, or is it for appearance only?

Sorrry, searched and couldn't find an answer.

Thanks in advance!

Just based on it's shape, I'd say it may push the front of the car down a tiny bit at very high speeds, but I wouldn't expect more than that from it.

I don't know that it would give much downforce. What it could do is keep some air from getting under the car and creating lift under the rear end. The ruff surfaces under the car create turbulence and the air builds up to create a high pressure area. Too much of a front airdam will increase aero drag due to the larger frontal area.
The infamous RX7 @ Bonneville that spins and flips onto it's roof, is an example of this.

You must read the RX-8 book. The entire car was designed for aerodynamics.

It is very functional for hitting curbs and catching low flying birds.

yes it has functionality. which is why every car manufacturer, from toyota (look at the matrix) to GM (look at the grand prix) has a front spoiler thats not painted so it can be easily replaced when it does catch a small bird.

it definitely keeps the front down at speeds over 60mph.

But does that include the appearance kit accesories? I'm no engineer, but the apperance kit spoiler doesn't look very functional to me.

Thanks for all the thoughts, by the way!

Aerodynamic downforce does not become a significant force under 120 mph. It's just math. the coefficient of drag is a bigger influence on anything under that speed. The less drag the better gas mileage. More downforce equals more drag equals less gas mileage. Simple physics.

spoliers are pure functionality. Just like rear diffusers.

Now wings on the other hand...
