Fuel door clip

Today while refueling, a small metal clip with plastic coating on one end flew off of the area where the gas door latches. I thought I'd put the clip in my cupholder and fix it at home, but after closing the fuel door it will no longer open. Can anyone take a photo of theirs so I can see how to snap ot back on? Guess I have to fix it before I run out of gas...

Thanks in advance!

Here are a couple of pics. Hope you get the door open. The part you refer to is probably the little tab that applies a little outward spring on the door so that it will pop open when the open lever is pulled. My guess is that if you apply a little outward pressure on the door with a lever and have someone pull the open lever it will open. You might want to just take it to a dealer for warranty repair.

Thanks for the photos, but I can't actually see the clip I was mentioning...maybe if you took a shot of the fuel door from a top angle it would be visible.

The clip I believe you are referring to is located within the circle. Looking at the clip from the side it resembles a ladle and it has a plastic coating on it. I don't have a clue as to what holds the clip in place, so I'm not sure you can reinstall the clip yourself or if the entire assembly must be replaced. In the latter case, take it in for warranty replacement. Of course, if the clip is broken, you will definitely need to see your dealer.

Not sure if this helps, but this is the only diagram from the service manual:

Thanks, I was able to snap it back into place today. I tweaked it a little bit so te door doesn't spring open as far, but at least it's functional. Thanks again for the photos & diagram. RX-8 Club is a great community!

And who knows how much the dealer would have charged me to fix that... :D

Inside Release?

Can't check my car at the moment, but the problem you cited reminded me that on my previous Volvo and current Saab there is an inside release for the fuel door in the trunk. (The purpose is obvious; if the remote mechanism breaks you can get the fuel door open, fill it up, and drive it to the dealer. )

Anyone know if the RX-8 has a similar feature?
