HID swap

HID swap
Due to a mistake at the dealer, I ended up with an 8 that didn't have HIDs. I think I'm able to buy a set of headlights off another rx-8 that had HIDs, the casings include the ballasts and leveling motors The mazda dealer said they won't do the swap, I was wondering how much its gonna cost me, where I should take it, and if its worth the price?

I just did the swap in my car and it was pretty easy. Keep in mind that you won't have auto-leveling with the swap, but thats really not a big deal.
You have to take the front bumper off to remove the housings, and you'll have to splice on a couple spade connectors from Radio Shack because the power connectors don't match. Its only 2 wires though, and it took me maybe 5 minutes for each to chop off the old connectors and crimp on new ones.
Other than the wires and the bumper, which are both easy, you just unscrew the old housings and screw on the new ones. Thats it.
I say do it, and enjoy your new HIDs!

Thanks a lot... The guys at the dealer told me I'd need new computers and programs along with new wiring harnesses, they told me it would cost 3-5 grand and thats when i knew I'd just ask here.

Can do.....
Buy them from Mazmart or on Ebay, like the Saxman says - no levelling, no big deal.
Probably cheaper if you just buy the housings with the projectors, then put your own ballasts and D2S bulbs in them.
I never had them before the '8, and now they are a basic requirement on any future vehicle for me!

thats some mistake by the dealer. sounds actually like a bait and switch. baited you with one package then to get you the car you wanted at the price they switched you to a lower package. "oops sorry forgot about that". hell did you check to make sure you only paid for what you got? what does the sales paperwork show? you should not have accepted the car and got the one you asked for.

I'm also interested in converting my stock halogen to HID. I just wanted to make sure I get everything that is needed. If I pick a website or seller on ebay that's selling HID kits, does it have to say it's for an RX8 or is it based only on bulb size? Also, in addition to picking the right size bulb (and picking the temp), it will have ballasts, mounting bracket, tape, ??? What else do I need? Thanks.

You COULD get an HID kit, but what I did was so much easier. Just get on eBay and find a set of used HID RX-8 housings. I got a set of housings, with ballasts AND bulbs for about $500.
By doing that, you just have have swap the parts, and you dont have to find a place for the ballasts, etc.

Cheapguy....
Get the housings that have the "projectors" or your switchover will just be a disaster - you can't just plug D2S bulbs/ballasts into a halogen housing and hope for the best.
