Lambo doors
#26
A couple of the baddest 8's on this board sport Lambo doors. I would do it if I didn't think the cash could buy something much better but if you have the extra cash, why not. I would do it just to keep my doors from being dinged and plus the ladies and my son would think its cool.

Seaching the net doesn't because you find tons of things. I would rather know which people have used and which suck.

But seriously.... the doors are played out. I went to a car show on sunday and probably 1/4 of the POS's there had them and like I said, thats in WV. I couldn't imagine in Cali or FL.

Hey WV, all I'm saying is that I would venture there's about 3 times more CF hoods out there than lambo doors, and I think that's a conservative estimate. I'm not saying that YOU specifically don't have a reason to have one, just that the CF hood look is extremely common.

Agreed except that CF hoods, although more common, always serve a purpose since they are typically lighter and stronger then the OEM hoods. If it looks great then thats a plus. Lambo doors are only for looks when stopped. I believe this is why more people will drop money on CF hoods then Lambo Doors.
There are so many different CF hoods that you can be a little more unique with your choice. Lambo Doors look the same on any car, although it may look rediculous on a prelude lol.

Personally, I have no interest in a CF hood, as I don't need the performance benefit and I dislike how it looks on WB. That doesn't mean there's anything wrong with them, just not my cuppa.

Yeah because there are no cooling benefits right? That turbo makes the engine bay pretty damn hot. If I wasn't a VIS authorized dealer I probably wouldn't have bought it either.

Most mods applied to cars have no performance gains. This is even more true with the RX8. When getting CF anything or lambo doors, it is all personal preference. With that being said, CF hoods and lambo doors(played out or not) will always look much better on a show car than a street car. Comparing what items look like on show cars and comparing them to your car or another persons car is an invalid argument. Depending where you live, certain things are played out. In Boston, I cannot go a week without seeing a different POS with lambo doors, 22" chrome and/or spinner rims, a GIANT muffler being held up with a wire hanger or duct tape, or a rust box with a massive sub box in the back seat.
Since the RX8 is a nicer car to begin with, a lot of mods that I personally do not like, don't look half bad. It's like Megan Fox sporting a skirt with spandex underneath with bowling shoes and a coat. You would still find her HOT while if your sister/gf/mother did that you would laugh at how stupid they look.

You know I really like this thread not becuz of the doors but just the fact that u guys stood up for your 8. Anyway I like the doors anybody in the NY have them I want to see em!

Certainly valid points, but I still think there's a lot of people who buy CF hoods for strictly aesthetic reasons. Of course, it's just a matter of perspective too. I don't think lambo doors are played out because I never see them. I also don't go to meets and shows either, which I guess is the only place you would see them. CF Hoods, on the other hand, are absolutely everywhere. So it's entirely possible we're just looking at things from different angles.

if i were to get a CF hood one day, i would eventually color match it with the rest of my car. the only reason i would get a CF hood is for the vents, but nothing too over done...

Wow, quite the discussion! Well, it took forever but heres my pics. I love the doors, they are way fun to have, and the attention they draw is amazing. Played out or not, they are very unique here in town, and I dont regret them yet.

I have had the VDC.com kit on my car since late 2005, and it works great. It did not come with door wire extensions, and has caused some issues over the years, until i used 30 wire cable from a hoist system. The cable has 30 conductors, high flexibility, with a sturdy insulation. it routed perfectly through the door holes and the frame holes where the original connector went. i spliced in with solder connections and heat shrink.
That wiring took forever to replace and i took the cable at least a foot into the passenger door.
when we installed the doors, i used loctite on all the bolts and so far have not had to adjust anything.
The car is a daily driver. i like the fact that the VDC kit does not go up 90 degrees, I can shut and open the door from my seat and getting in is pretty easy. my kids love it as well, especially when we roll up at school and i let them out, or pick them up.
i spent a considerable amount on them, because they were new 4 years ago and not many people had them. i also considered the LSD kit out of Germany, but it was about $400 more, and I did not know how the aluminum would hold up to use. The VDC kit was around $2000, i believe it is much cheaper now. It took us about 3 days to put it on.
4 years running, no cracks, no adjustments, and only wiring issues. When we first put it on, I did not extend the wiring harness. The constant up and closing caused wires to break, first started splicing and then finally fixed it with the cable from the electric hoist. i think you can buy it from an electrical supply company, they will have to order it.
Even though I spent alot putting them on, i am glad i spent the money, it has proven well worth it given all the cheaper kits i have seen broken, and doors falling off i have actually witnessed at a car show. Weld on kits IMO are not suited for the 8 due to the lack of thick steel in the A pillar side frame area. Bolt on is definitely the way to go.

As this thread has completely wandered into various directions, I was hoping someone might answer a stupid question I have been wondering about for some time.
My biggest "beef" with vertical doors is that when you pull them down, you still have to pull them horizontally to shut them. Isnt there any way to make aftermarket vertical doors come down in a smooth swoope and engage the locking mechanism in a single motion? Basically like any OE gullwing door?
I suppose that because of the lack of this smooth engagement, I have disliked the doors, personally. I also admit that I tell vertical door owners that their doors are cool, then walk away and giggle like little school girls with my friends about how silly the doors are. This is not because we actually think the doors are silly, we just need to boost our egos somehow and you are a good target. Sorry.

You know, I have been wondering about the smooth out and up motion since I put these on too. I dont think it would be too tough, mine has a stop that stops the door from going up if its not open all the way. It serves to keep the door and hinge from interfering with the fender. The door has to be open horizontally a bit before it lifts. But, if you could pop the door handle, start lifting it right away, and have a guide that would direct the door outwards as it goes up, that might be cool. And easy to do. At least in my head hehe. It would work the same on the way down... start the door coming down, then it would follow the same guide and slide inwards at the same time. Dunno... maybe its something I will look at.
