Making rotary accents

Does anyone have a pattern for the rotary accents that they would like to share? I was thinking about doing this myself, but thought I would see if anyone has such a thing already. I am sure a lot of people would be greatful for the pattern, so we could make our own.

If not, any suggestions on how to do it? I was thinking of appling duct tape to the area, trimming it nice and neat, then pulling it off and trasferring to poster board. Then uing that pattern to cut stainless or aluminum...

Could be a good solution for those of us unwilling to part with the money, but happy to put in the time.

It would be difficult IMO to reproduce these by simply cutting the aluminum. The curves would be a bitch to reproduce don't ya think?

I think with a little elbow grease, and the right tools, it could be done. But maybe your right though.

I was thinking that if the stock were thin enough, that one could cut and bend mostly on the bench, and final shaping and fitting could be atcheaved on the car.

don't get me wrong I'm sure it can be done. I'm sure with the right tools and lot's of elbow grease.
damn! I just saw the prices for the accents on Mazda's site, $70 front,$85 rear
I guess I didn't realize how much these were. Mine were on my 8 when I bought it.
Actually, the dealer had to replace my front one when they repainted my air dam. Maybe I could see if the still have the old one. I'll call them to see,if they do I'll send you a PM.

I've seen an 8 where he painted the area where the accent would be. Looked pretty good IMO.

And that note, I would be interested in anyone's DIY that they have done. Paint? Chrome molding?

Goofy lookin'....

I don't mind the rear accent, it's at least rotor shaped - but that front one's just goofy lookin'.

Reminds me of a halloween 'goatee' beard - kind of like Bender wore in Futurama!...or that one tooth hanging out of Cletus's stoopid mouth.

Just goofy..... :D

I have actually had several people ask me why my little sports car has a trailer hook up in the back. Confused at first I soon realized they though the rear rotor accent was a trailer hitch mount.

There should be a simple mathematical formula to make any size rotary accent.

With equal sides it's obviously an equilateral triangle - all you need to do is figure out the curving out of the sides and the rounding of the apexes - I vaguely remember seeing a rotor with equations and notation in some stuff I was researching; I've been doing a lot of that since I have until Jan '06 until I get home and buy my 8 (army dude in middle east blah blah blah).

Edit: Internet to the rescue!

I'm not very good at math, but I found a webpage that gives the equations (and a whole lot more) to get rounded flank rotors. If someone better at math than I cares to and really wants to make a rotor accent they can do it with this information - just plug in the size triangle you want and add round flanks.

Rotary Accent Equations.

fibreglass and bodyfillers would be the best way to go.
get it painted sparkly silver afterwards

ps. make sure you tape the areas you are working on, apply some wax would help to take the fibreglass template off the front/rear bars

You could easily make something like that on a CNC machine. I made a rotary shaped shift **** out of billet aluminum for someone 7 on one.

Here's a few pic's of the stainless steel crest I've just got off this guy

Lots of bends to get right, easier to buy one I think
