Thumbs up 1sr North American MazdaSpeed Enhanced RX8

I hear that the first North American MazdaSpeed parts will be on an RX8 to be displayed at the Austin "Hot Rod Show" sponsored by Roger Beasley. January 1st and 2nd in Austin, TX. I think they are selling the Titanium RX after the show...

The very first and only MS RX8 parts available in 2003 to dealers, from Mazda North American Operations, have been shipped to Roger Beasley Mazda South for this event. I have been told that the parts will be installed on a titanium color. I'm making plans to attend...perhaps pictures for us all.

MS wing: my installation suggestions

I installed an MS wing yesterday (mostly) following the OEM install instructions. To briefly review they are as follows:

1. Use drill templates to drill two 8mm holes on either side of trunk.
2. Loosely attach angle brackets to trunk.
3. Loosely attach trunk lip over angle brackets.
4. Loosely attach wing to angle brackets.
5. Make sure everything is aligned correctly and fasten securely.

Observations
1. The trunk bolts are smaller than 8mm. That's to give you extra adjustment room. The template may be off so feel free to drill a bigger (10mm) hole.
2. The instructions are unclear regarding attachment of the sponge rubber under the angle brackets. I suggest the sticky side goes up and adheres to the angle bracket.
3. The drilled holes may not line up properly even with careful use of the template. Because of this I suggest the following installation procedure:

My suggestions regarding installation
1. Attach sponge rubber to bottom of angle brackets.
2. Attach angle brackets to trunk lip (1 bolt for bracket) finger-tight.
3. Attach wing to angle brackets finger-tight.
4. Place entire assembly on trunk and align.
5. Have someone apply downward pressure on wing to keep brackets in place while doing steps 6-7.
6. Unbolt angle brackets from trunk lip.
7. Raise trunk lip and mark holes where you're supposed to drill through trunk.
8. Remove wing assembly, drill trunk, seal exposed metal.
9. Bolt angle brackets to trunk.
10. Lift trunk lip up (remember it's still hanging loose between angle brackets and wing) and remove adhesive backing. Press down to secure on to trunk.
11. Bolt trunk lip to angle brackets.
12. Tighten all bolts to recommended torque.

Not yet. Will post interesting photos of the car and parts once I'm done. Really the only interesting pics will be of the backside of parts. There are lots of professional photos of the complete kit out there already.

Oh, one minor note: the wing is commonly seen at a 0 degree angle. There are several other settings. Putting it in the second highest notch means the wing obscures the middle quarter of your view in the rearview mirror. As STi owners know, this is the most important portion when it comes to identifying rapidly approaching cops.

Did you already have an OEM spoiler prior to this upgrade? If not.. any idea if the mounting holes are in the same locations for both the MS and OEM?

Well, for one thing your price listed for the Rotary Extreme front bumper is WAAAaaay off... it's $650, not $1490. Bit of a difference there. http://www.rotaryextreme.com/msstyle.html

MS Side Skirts: my installation impressions

Instructions are fairly straightforward and easy to follow. You drill four holes in the side of the car and four underneath.

Tip #1, removing rub strip under car: The rub strip is held on with several fasteners. The fasteners have "ears" that secure them in place. Use a flat blade screwdriver to pry the ear off, inserting the screwdriver at right angles to the car body.

Tip #2, removing a part just in front of rub strips: At one point the instructions say to remove a fastener used to secure the second screw on the rub strip. I'm not sure why since I had to replace it at the end. Ignore this step and leave it alone.

Tip #3, attaching white plastic fastners to side skirts: These parts hook on to the side skirt first and are then pressed into the holes you drilled previously. Do not attach them to the car first like I did on the first pass. You'll have to pry them out which can be difficult.

Tip #4, white plastic fastners: Four are used on each side. Three have larger gaps to fit onto the side skirt. One has a smaller gap to fit onto the metal insert attached to the side skirt in the rear.

Tip #5, removing adhesive tape: Before attaching the side skirt for the last time, peel 1" from each adhesive tape backing and wrap a 4" length of masking tape around it. The tape's "tail" should point up. After everything's lined up on the car it's easy to pull the "tail" to remove the adhesive backing.

Purchasing With MazdaSpeed Body Kit Information

i thought i should pass this on.

i called the dealership this morning and told them that i was interested in a mazda speed version of the 8. They told me that they have no idea when and if that will come to the US. When i asked them if they could get the body kit (front, rear, side, and mirrors) they said sure. I asked if we could somehow work on the price for them if i purchased them with the car.

i am going to pay $32,731 for the car out the door minus the registration fee's and state taxes. The gentleman i spoke with said we could do something about the price, how is this. We could offer it as a 'we owe' deal and that would pretty much take care of it! I took this as they were going to include it for the price i am going to pay.

It may be too late for people who have already purchased thier 8 but for future customers you may want to ask about this the kit alone will cost around $4500 from japanparts.com with everything painted except for the mirrors. (excluding shipping) so i will be surprised if they will throw it in for the price of the car however that is how he implied they could do.

Joe

Yeah I'm a slacker. I plan to take pics once all the body parts are on. The MazdaSpeed front bumper has an air duct for one oil cooler. I plan to vacform a mirror image to fit on the other side. That will probably take a couple weekends so it may be a while before everything's on the car.

Exclamation plate cover

I forgot to answer your question on the foam.

The US spec car has a larger metal reinforcement bar so you can see about 1.5" of the bar with the Mazdaspeed bumper. The Mazdaspeed front bumper comes with a plate at the mouth that covers the Jspec thinner reinforcement bar but it's not large enough to cover the US spec bar. We are going to make a plate that's large enough to cover the US spec reinforcement bar so you are not going to see the foam. We will include that with the bumper free of charge.

Chuck Huang

In the picture you've posted (front view), was the front plate (Japan) cover installed? What material is the plate made of? Does Mazda also sell a genuine clear corners?

thanks
Allan
