There isn't a way to actually open the light and clean it out, and then try to reseal it with some of the silicone sealant listed above is there?

I don't think so. I am having trouble with mine as well. (Passenger side) I think it is because the hole for the trunk lock is leaking. Now I just bought mine used from a Toyota dealership but it is well under the 50k. Even if I bought his used from another dealer, Mazda should still cover the tail light eh?

i too had an aquarium passenger side taillight. I'll post pics of it tonight. There was about an inch of water in it as well (rained over the weekend). Took it straight to the dealership, no hassle, and they ordered me a new taillight.

I just found out today about this. I didn't have the time to drop off my car for just a gasket, so I talked them into selling me the gasket. They mentioned that they well not replace the tail lights anymore, they only will get the water out and replace the gasket with the "upgraded" gasket.

i had this happen to me 4 times...Mazda in colorado springs replaced them each time free of charge. even gave me a cx-7 to drive while i waited. it happened once in the winter and i had a block of ice in my tail light...not fun.

So is 50k miles the cutoff for warranty coverage on this issue? Both my tail lights have been fogging, but now that it's winter, the water never evaporates and they're always fogged. I'm at 49,000 miles, so figure I should get it looked at ASAP.

I had a front and a rear lenses develop condensation. Both were replaced under warranty, no questions, no problem.

There are theories on condensation. For some assemblies, manufacturers put intentional weep holes (at the bottom) to allow condensation to drip out, should it occur. It is often difficult to keep completely sealed assemblies absolutely water tight if there is a large differential in temperature, combined with high humidity. You would also think that the heat of the bulbs would "burn off" or cause evaporation of the condensation but evidently it does not.

To me it sounds like these should be sealed assemblies that are simply leaking due to poor sealing. Those out of warranty should be able to disassemble the lenses, dry 'em out good then use either the new gaskets or some good silicone RTV sealant to seal 'em back up.

At about 49,500 miles, and getting it checked out tomorrow evening. Going to take another trip to the car wash to make sure they're foggy enough before I go. They have been foggy for the entire last month, and of course the week I go to have them looked at it's 40 degrees warmer than it has been for the last month...

remove the tail light
drain the water
use heat gun to evap the last bits of water
use sealant to cover crack
use a power drill with the smallest drill to drill a tiny hole on the far left and the far right on the bottom of the tail light
reinstall the tail light

the holes are used to let air to enter so the tail light wont fog up or hold anymore water in. Ive done this to mine. No water or bugs have gotten in so far. its been 4 months. and it rains a lot here

I have a 2006 with 25,000 miles. The passenger side keeps filling up with water. I just took it to the dealership and they won't replace it. When they looked at it, it was completely fogged up with about 1/2" of water pooled at the bottom.

I have an 05' with 8k, had the gaskets fixed with the new tsb a few times already, my passenger side is half full again and the bulbs are all burnt out. Someone called it with the stop hard and screw up the electrical system, I didnt try to do it but it happened. This crap is lame, Mazda needs a real fix. Guess the diy is the way to go.

I just had mine done as well, no problems. So it seems the 'upgraded' gaskets are no better than the older ones. Hmmmmm.

I'll add my name to the list. I took my 04 in for the second time to have the passanger side light replaced. The first time no problem. This time no warranty.
The car was 48 months old in March, with only 27k miles. This time the lens was half full of water and was turning green! I was told sorry, your warranty has lapsed. The cost of the light $250 + labor. I'm pissed. 27k on this car with no exceptions on an obvious design problem that Mazda is fully aware of. TSB have been issued and still they turn a blind eye.

For a poor designed part which would cost Mazda little to fix, they risk loosing future business on new car sales. These problems are common knowledge which couldn't help but drive down the percieved value of these cars. As much as l enjoy driving this car, don't think I'll be willing to purchase another Mazda product. Oh, and I've owned 5 of them over the years.

I've asked for my zone manager to call me, I'll be shocked if my phone rings.
