New new paint job on car looks and feels bubbly.. can it be smoothed out...HELP?
I just had collision repair done on my passenger side door to get the dents out after an accident. The trouble is they had to repaint the underside of the door and after closer inspection the paint job looks and feels bubbly, and its not as smooth as the driver side. Is this suppose to happen after a fresh coat of paint is put on and will it smooth out on its own... or Should i take it back and have them smooth out the paint job.. Help?

first of all my family is in the bodyshop business, im sorry to tell u this bro but the person who did the bodywork did a poor job of sanding the putty on after fixing the repair to help even it out before the primer gets put on and if you use 1500 sand paper its not goint to help this prob. is not in the "clear coat" is not a fine scratch this prob. occured before the paint was done sorry bro but you need to get the whole door redone i have been there an done that my rx-8, bring my car to other shops thinking it will get done faster because my fater gets alot of work but they did a rican job on my car so if you have any ques call me at 1973 865 5966. ps spddmn01 doesn't know what the **** he is talking about he doesn't know first thing about paint work.

I dont want to say that njItalianboy is wrong, but he very well couuld be. Please explain better what you mean by bubbly. Do you mean that there are little spots on the paint that have air pockets, or is it a huge (1 inch or larger) that seems like it has air under it? These could be two completely different problems. Or is there a spot in the paint that sticks out but is solid (ie dosnt feel like it has air underneith it)? If its the last option then njItalianboy is right, there has been too much bondo/putty applied before the painting ever began. But this is very rare because even an idiot can feel this. The painter and teh prep man will always feel down the spot to be painted before proceding. The painter should have caught this problem before the priming ever began. If it was either of the first two then these are problems with the paints. It could have been anything, but it usually is from grease or wax. The painter may have went to eat before he painted your door, had some greasy food then never washed his hands and touched that spot on your door. Or it could have been something in the air that cause a problem we call fish eyes. Anyways I could go on for a long time with many more reasons why this happened. If you want you can Yahoo IM me at SAFD1450. I would be more then happy to discuss this with you. As I said there are many reasons why this may have happened so it MAY NOT have been the shops fault, but either way you should take it back to them and they will most likely have to sand off the clear coat and reapply.

ok Guys I'll try to explain it a little better.. The whole door was repainted but the paintjob on the bottom part of the passaenger side door is what looks little off. I believe it was the decal part on the bottom part of the door. I actually went back to the body shop and explained to the guy that the bottom part of the undamaged side looks smooth so why doesnt it look smooth on the side you repainted.. His explanation was that the part I was concerned about is a decal on the car and the texture of the paint is meant to stop flying debree and pebbles from hitting the car too prevent scratches. You can't really notice it looking at the car but up close it doesn't look exactly like the other side .. and if I'm paying 1300 out of my own pocket for the body work, i would like it look flawless.
The funny thing is the dents that were in my car were no where near the bottom part of my door .. they fixed the dents and repainted the whole door. I will try to get pics posted so you have a better idea of what i mean
On a positive note i have a lifetime warranty on the body work they did on the car, but I'm thinking about getting a second opinion maybe from a detail shop or another body shop.
Any advice would be great, hope this clarfies things a little

Oh yeah when i mean decal .. i mean the decal on side door that comes with every new car that can be peeled off.. this is not a decal i added to the car.. hope this makes sense!

If it looks like it's pebbly/bubbly it is probably what is called "orange peel" (because it looks like the outside of an orange). Orange peel happens when the person spraying the area gets too far away from the car and the paint spray is actually drying BEFORE it reaches the car. It's then trapped under wet paint and gives that weird texture. It's like overspray under wet paint. Yeah, they can fix it by doing the job again (wet sand and repaint) but if they allowed this to roll out of their shop once you'd better keep a close eye on the redo. I'd also check areas for overspray due to lazy masking while painting.
If you're just talking about the stone chip decal, the air bubbles in mine went away after a few days....mebbe it's like tint??? I dunno....

re-read my post above, then take it back in for a repaint. Unless I am seriously misunderstanding you, I think you have a more serious problem then orange peel otherwise known as frog eyes or fish eyes. The shop should redo the job for you.
