OEM vs. MS Spoiler Question

I need some help and I'm hearing conflicting information.

I've heard from one member that the holes for the MS spoiler (real or replica) were the same as the OEM spoiler holes so if I removed my OEM and installed the MS, there would be no problems.

I've heard from another member (and I read this as well) that the holes are close but not quite and if I removed my OEM and installed the MS there would be a small ugly gap/hole in the top of my trunk.

Which is true? Has anyone removed their OEM for the MS? Problems with this? Issues I need to beware of?

Also, in the MS spoiler pics I've seen, it looks like there is a long piece that attaches fully from end to end at the edge of the trunk that the brackets attach to. Is this correct?

i've herad the same things. It may have to do with which ms replica spoiler your using. There are several different companies that make this. I've heard on the real one it doesnt line up.

I had my oem spoiler installed (horribly) by Town North Mazda, and not from the factory. I am sure it is placed differently, so i'm pretty sure that has an effect on how the MS will fit.

If there are any body shop pros on this board, they can probably give you some good suggestions on how to resolve the situation. I would like to know as well.

If the wing doesn't line up with your stock holes, go ahead and have the person installing it, make new new ones. They can cover up the others, and since the MS has the lower spoiler also, it can cover up any marks or anything left behind. Well, within it's limits.

The main thing to worry about is the left over holes, and or double sided tape left behind from the other wing. Ask where the wing was installed. Maybe, the holes are perfect for the real MS. Maybe even the replica. You'll never know until you try! I hope it all works out for you.

Same question here.
I read posts that the holes are the same.. and that they are different.
Guess I will have to just order it and hope it covers the old holes.. if they are different.
If you get more info DG415, please post

I'm assuming that you read one of my posts about going from the OEM wing to MS wing. After inspecting a couple of different RX-8's at a local event, I discovered that some OEM wings are linied up with the rear of the trunk lid...this is how mine was. For other 8's, the wing is not lined up with the edge of the trunk...it is actually about one, to two fingers widths closer to the rear glass. This is the proper installation location spot for the MS Wing. Mine did not line up perfectly with the lip of the trunk because the dealer did not install my OEM wing properly. In either case, there is a third hole from the OEM wing which is not used for the MS Wing...but which is, covered by the lower portion of the 3-peice wing.

As far as the marks left by the OEM wing which were not covered by the MS Wing, I was unable to remove the "scratch" that was left into the paint, but rubbing compouund did assist a bit in removing the 3m tape and small blemishes.

I don't remember how close to the edge my OEM is but let me make sure I understand. Worst case scenerio, whatever holes are left the OEM spoiler are covered by the lower portion of the MS wing? I will have goo and small blemishes that can be removed by rubbing compound? How did you get a "scratch"?

Yes, everything will be covered by the lower portion. I would recommend putting something in the third hole though (the one not used by the new MS Wing)...maybe a retainer clip and some waterproof sealant.....just in case the 3m tape fails and water gets under the lower portion.

Yes, wax initially, and then rubbing compound (very softly) to get the more stubbor parts off. The scratches came because the stock wing does move back and forth slightly when you drive...and there is no rubber grommet on the underside..other than around the three mounting bolts. The MS Wing does come with a nice gasket though....

I know the scratch is something other members have reported as well, so I know it is not just something specific to my vehicle.

One other comment. I actually did not like the way the MS wing looked with my Side Flares and front appearance lip/air dam. These parts were round and the MS Wing is definately square. I switched my front bumper and side skirts out for the MS versions and like the look of everything together. This is a personal taste though....and I to, started with just the wing to see if I "needed" to switch out other parts. Good luck on your project.

Not bad, but since I've got the MS replica front and sides, I kinda wanted something to make the car look more "finished." I think my OEM looks girly with the kit and I think the MS (real or replica) would look better.

The MS would complete your car big time! Esspecially now that you have the MS front and sides. :D ****, it completes my car and I dont even have the front or sides YET.

Its all personal preference I guess. I don't like the MS kit b/c it is a bit over the top imo. I like the clean "sleeper" look instead. The Ms wing just doesn't flow with the lines of the car.

I actually like the car better without a spoiler than with the regular one, which I have.
I am ordering the MS spoiler this week.
Hopefully the stock spoiler will come off without any damage..
Thanks for the info everyone.

This isn't a spoiler, it's an extension of the trunk! A real spoiler gives the car diminsion and at higher speeds can actually be effective. This car looks flat to me.
A new spoiler should be the first mod - then strakes!

It is an additional lip but I'm not sure if mazda sells this part separatly. It looks like we are the only ones that like this wing/lip. :o

i like the way the MS wing looks, I actually was going to get it, then I decided I wanna just go with the subtle look on the 8. The look that if you really know about the car you can tell its been modded, while the rest of the world thinks its stock.

Yup...its available through Mazda. I saw a couple of Shinka's at my local Mazda and they didn't have the trunk lip, but did have the appearance package extras..front air dam, side and rear aeros, as well as the front and rear rotory accents. I guess it just depends on what the dealer adds to them, or what you add after you buy it.

The lip looks similar to the trunk lip that has been available overseas since the 8 was released.

I installed the MS wing yesterday.
The holes did not line up with my factory spoiler.
My spoiler was installed at the factory and not the dealer.

The factory holes were not even also.
I was unable to drill 1 hole on 1 side because it came too close to 1 of the factory spoiler holes. I used a round file.

I love it. Makes a huge change in how the car looks.

FYI.

Sounds like you had the same problem I did...I ended up jamming the bolts into the holes and making it work. I wanted to avoid making large oval holes...But in doing this, the MS wing didn't fit nicely against the edge of the trunk lip...How does your line up? If you open the trunk and look at the under side of the lower wing portion, do you see any white?

Don't worry about it.

A good body man can fix it correctly no matter how the holes are lined up.
