Angry Problem with Velocity Red Paint: Anyone Else?

Got my velocity red 192 in April 2004 (built probably February). Noticed within first week two pinhead sized spots (silver coloured) under lacquer. More and more are appearing and some are now bubbling up through lacquer. Now several spots over every panel in car. Anyone else noticing similar? Dealer is having examined.

No problems here ... bummer though for you ... sounds like you'll be getting a new paint job ... hope it all works out well.

Yeah, I would like to see pics too.

This is the first post I have read regarding any problems with the paint.

Pix attached

Best pix I could get considering spots the size of pinheads! First one shows cluster of silver dots; appear as if under the lacquer. Second one shows one starting to raise up through paint with black dot!

You didn't get drops of sap or anything on it did you? Sap will really screw up a paint job.

Definately no sap. Spots are even showing inside door frames and under spoiler!

Hm. My Titanium grey has a couple of chipped spots that I don't think were from rocks. But nothing like you are talking about.

There was a story in AutoExpress (UK weekly motoring magazine) that had an article about a guy in the UK that had something similar. The dealers had actually botched a respray before he took delivery and the paint started to go streaky and show up similar blemishes to above. It was Red also.

I'd take back to dealer and ask them what they plan to do about it.

You definitely need to push to get that covered under warranty.

Same here

OK I have several of those spot everywhere.

But they are bigger, about twice the size.

I think there from some sort of aftermarket finnish the dealers put on the new cars to prtect the paint.

Anyhow, I used Maguiars swirl remover number 9.
Then I use Nu Finnish.

No problem with the paint now!

Well whatever the problem is, I'm sure it's covered by the warranty. Hopefully it's nothin too serious :p

No problem with my VR. In fact, it's one of the best paint jobs I've ever had on a car.

No problem with my Velocity Red, which I have had over a year now. Except for a year's worth of small paint chips from normal driving, the finish is still perfect. As DAC17 said "it's one of the best paint jobs I've ever had on a car."

I just noticed the same problem with mine (VR, built around the same time).

I went to the dealer on Friday and they told me to take it to their paint and body shop to have a look and see if it is a warranty problem.

What did your dealer say?

So, I took it to the paint and body shop for them to have a look. The guy agreed that it didn't look right, so he's now talking with the Mazda Warranty person. The next step is for the body shop to have their paint specialist do a little sanding and buffing to determine how deep the problem is. If it's under the clear coat (and it appears to be) then they may repaint the car. I'll keep all y'all updated.

I just got back from the paint and body shop. They found that with some light sanding (2000 grit) and buffing that the ghost marks (or white marks or whatever you want to call them) would come out. So, they put together an estimate for what it would cost to do the whole car and it's going to be sent to Mazda. The paint people said it'd take about three days to get it done.
