Replacing H11 with H9 bulb for Foglights

I know that the H9 bulb and the H11 bulb are similar and an H9 can be made to fit an H11 socket. Has any one done thsi modification to the foglights of their 8?

The reason I would like to do this is because the H9 bulb is a much brighter bulb. But I would also like to know if anyone has been melting anything with this little mod.

Also where do you get Xenonmatched H9 bulbs.

Thanks in advance.

From Daniel Stern's lighting site (http://www.danielsternlighting.com/p...roducts.html):

"H11 bulbs
These new single-filament 55w bulbs are quickly supplanting HB4/9006 in new low-beam headlamp and fog lamp designs. (They are not physically interchangeable with any 9000-series bulb!) As is the case with other bulb families—such as 9004/9007, 9005/9006, etc.—the H11 has different base keys than its H9 high-beam and H8 fog lamp counterparts. Somebody goofed on the spec, though, for the difference between H11 and H9 base keys is insufficient; it's too easy to install an H9 bulb where an H11 belongs. The difference in light output between these two designs is enormous (1350 lumens from the H11, 2100 from the H9), so putting an H9 in place of an H11 will obviously cause the lamp to produce a lot more light. Some lamps are designed such that the optics would handle the extra light well, without creating excessive glare for other road users. Many, however, are not. As with H8 and H9, H11 bulbs are not widely available in the aftermarket."

I remember seeing at least one person on the forum that has done this, I don't remember who it was and I can't seem to find it searching, but it has been done.

Hoen doesn't have an H9, but PIAA does. Search eBay for H9 PIAA and you should find their Xtreme Force bulb from seller Autohobbyasia Auto Accessories Shop. I purchased my Xtreme Force H11's from that seller and recomend them. The Xtreme Force is 4700K and is almost a perfect match for the HIDs colorwise. I've thought about getting the H9s but haven't taken the plunge yet.

Aipex.

Thanks for the info. Over the weekend I did the foglight rewire mod and am now looking to changing the bulbs to match. On a night drive the H11s are too dim for highway speed driving. I'm hoping the H9s will brighten things up.

I'm contemplating removing the little reflector inside the foglight housing to give off a little more light too.

JDM and Euro spec RX-8's don't have the cap over the bulb in the fog light, just US models. Apparently because we use our fog lights all the time as a status symbol. Look through the Super Autobacs thread. Here's an example:

If anyone knows a way to get them out please share.

H9's are 65 watts. Shouldn't make that much difference.

I believe Nokya and other sketchy brands have "stage II" H9's that are in fact 100 watts. I agree with you about staying away from these high wattage bulbs.

I know that Hoen used to carry H9 bulbs but when I checked out their site recently, they were not listed.

However, I have bought myself a pair of Mtec H9, 65W, 4350K off ebay for $30.95.

I hope the bulbs are a good temperature. Last night I was driving around my hood with just the fogs on and they were too dim. I'm hoping making the switch to an H9 bulb will make this a bit better.

As long as I get the bulbs by Friday I should have all the pictures and How-To by next week.

That doesn't make any sense. 8500K is a very blue color temp, not yellow. Yellow is in the 2500K to 3500K range. If the manufacturer of these bulbs doesn't know that, I don't know if I'd trust them.

305Wankel has got me a bit worried about the quality of the Mtec bulbs but I've read good things about them in other forums.

Anyway I have received the bulbs and will be installing them this weekend. I'll post the results and details on the H9 to H11 socket modification. So hold off judgement on these Mtecs!

I completed the H9 modifications on the weekend.

You can take a look at the DIY forum or follow the link below to find out how:
