Interesting....
Here's what looks ricey to normal people. Most people don't think ricey cars look good, they think they look silly.
1. Different colored parts. Wheels other than a silver or ocassionally body color. Hoods/trunks/panels in any color other than the car's color unless they tie directly into an overall theme of the car. Different colored parts that don't tie directly into an overall theme make the car look like it was in an accident and the owner went to the junk yard and got a new panel but didn't have the cash to get it painted. Not that the owner did that or that the parts are not quality parts but that is the perception normal people have.
2. Too many pointless vents that don't do anything but slow down the car.
3. Strange angles on body kits, all they do is slow down the car.
4. Stickers and vinyl patterns. Stickers scream rice.
5. Wierd off color window tint. Don't tint your windows lime green if your car is red, that's just bad taste.
6. Mods that make part of the car non-functional. Piggybacks that prevent cruise control from working, or that cause a constant CEL, or that don't work with the traction control. These sorts of mods make it look like the owner is cutting corners.
If you want to look ricey and like your car came out of the fast and the furious movies that's ok. Feel free, it's ok to look that way, it's ok to think that is the greatest thing since sliced bread. But if you're questioning the whole ricey look and want to go for a more classy sports car style then avoid rules 1-6.
I guess I don't see your backbone point either. Doing the obligatory body kit, rays wheels, carbon fiber hood, catback, clear corners, turbo, two tone body, strange patterned interior fabric, stickers, chip/piggyback, and gauges isn't exactly original. It's basically exactly the formula everybody uses for building a rice style car. These days it takes more backbone to mod japanese car and not follow that formula.
There are cars posted on this site that are really good, to the same level as some of the best 7's. For example I love MissyK's car except for her wheels (I like her old one better but understand her reasoning for the change), and her friend's car in the orange is just bad ***, great paint job, great wheels, some custom work that looks like it could have been stock, etc. There's a white car (no body kit) with white 19's and dark tint that looks great.
Personally I prefer to build the car towards my own vision of what I want, rather than some kid's vision in japan from 2 years ago, or some american exec's that knows if he says his part is "JDM" there is a segment that will buy that over something of equal or better quality.

As for the starter of this thread... If I were you Id go with this combo:
Autobahn front, Veilside skirts, Fabulous rear.
Although Im usually not a fan of the V-side kit it doesnt look too bad on your car, but if your looking for something new, go for it! Nothing like that giddy feeling you get when you look at your newly kitted car for the first dozen or so times!
GL with it all man, and be sure to post pix when you get it all figured out and wrapped up!

oh i will, it's still awhile away though, i still have some other things to do first, hey if the new rims look good on this kit i might keep it, i doubt it though it's gotten old,

New rims will freshen it up a bit Im sure, but youre looking for something more drastic than that it seems.
Im really interested to see what direction you go with this, it will probably help me decide how I choose to wrap up my body kit as well.
Right now I have the Tsunami front end with the oem sides and nothing on the rear. Im thinking about getting the Autobahn skirts, or possibly the V-side ones, and the Fabulous rear end... but I cant 100% make up my mind. Im like you though, got a bit of time to think on it.
Post your pix ASAP though, Im sure it will narrow down my choices!

If you were in SoCal, I could take you to a place that has all those kits you are considering lined up so you could make sure the stuff lines up how you want. That being said, just make sure you have a good body guy that knows how to do fiberglass, and you can probably get them to customize them to flow better. Intense motorsports did that with their V-Side RX8

yeah i think this time i'm going to go with a knock off i just have to find a really good quality one. I got a buddy that put a body kit on his car and he used a knock off and it fit on his car easier than my authentic veilside kit did... and it was cheaper than mine. so i think i'm going to do a ureathane kit too.

i like the variety of 8's i see on this board. the ones I like the most tend to have the "clean" look (is that the opposite of rice?). I like Autobahn, Mazdaspeed, and Tsunami fronts - mainly cause I dont like a pointy nose on the 8, and these kits are more rounded/smooth. I also prefer no excessive protruding vents in the front. I know the Tsunami kit wouldn't fit your sides (or any sides for that matter) and the MS is incredibly popular. I'm sort of new here though and havent seen all the kits, and very few in person. Oh, and as you probably could have guessed, I prefer lip spoilers to keep it "clean". Im not sure if you asked for my opinion, but there it is.
On a side note, two friends (girls) of mine essentially called me a ricer for putting white LEDs in my interior!

U know, a lot of people hate the Veilside kits..
Look at it from Veilside point of view for a change. They name the kit Veilside D1 GT series, and some of u knows that D1 is a Grand prix series of drift competition in Japan, even bigger than the F1 for them. So how do you get all the down force and still attract a lot of attention?? They make a kit that serve their purpose. So if u want attention, go with veilside, u wanna do car shows like Chrism and have a winning streaks, go with veilside.
U wanna do tracks?.. go with Mazda speed or Ings. At the end of the day it really comes down to what u want to do with u'r car, what serve u'r purpose....know what I mean.
Try the R-magic, it still have the agressive look but more subtle than Veilside. Less flary...

yeah the rmagic front is what i'm going to do, but i don't know if i'm going to go authentic or knock off, i know it's mostly better to go with the real thing but i've heard and seen good things with a couple knock offs, just haven't seen any nice rmagic knock offs yet.

as long as your kit is authentic it's not rice, rice to me = cheap knock off parts only done to suit the fad and look "cool",
As long as you're putting real parts on your car and doing it for the right reasons I fail to see any "rice" at all
Not sure if anyone mentioned it but I really like the Vertex Lang front, and I think it would match up nice with the vs sides
