Shortly after the first '8s got off the truck at Trussville Mazda, I stopped by. I had a discussion with some old guy there. He was pissing and moaning about how distracting digital speedometers were. He said he'd rather read angles. He said he didn't mind if it were digital as long as it was a needle instead of numbers.
Having driven an '85 New Yorker (just 4 years younger than I am) when I was 16, I'd delt with digital speedometers. I'm sure at some point in history, they could be annoying as they probably had no "change buffer", so they constantly updated. Now-a-days, they buffer before changing to the next reading, so that they aren't so distracting.
As far as an analog replacement, I'm sure there are some "generic" gauges that you could use. I don't reckon they'd fit in the same spot as the digital spot. You'd have to mount them externally. I've also seen digital analog ones like on the "mazdaspeed" nav unit that was on one of the threads here. I guess it depends on what you want.
In short, I'm sure you can replace it. I'm sure you can hack it into something elegant if you wanted to spend the time. To me, it's not worth the effort, but to each his own. But I'm one of those people that have to think about what they are reading when they look at an analog clock.
