Stealth Bulbs

How the heck do I reach into that area Mikeb? I can't seem to get into it... turned the tires to the far right, took off those pegs, and I still can't reach into it... is there an Easier way?
I got 7440 bulbs which the parts dept at Mazda said should be good.

I just picked some "silvervision" bulbs from auto-illumination. I bought 7440's for both front & rear turn signals. They look great on the RX-8. The only drawback is they don't flash real bright orange like the stock bulbs do. I suppose the silver coating has to reduce the amber light to a degree. But for $3.49 each, no complaints here.

BTW: to install the front bulbs, you have to remove 6 plastic tabs that holds the fender liner. I was able to peel back the liner just enough to reach in behind the headlight assembly and get to the bulb. Pretty easy, the fronts took 10 minutes. If you search for clear side marker install, you'll find a step by step w/ photos on how to remove the fender liner.

there are a few companies that make these bulbs.
philliips silvervisions as mentioned is one.
Sylvania also has silverstars in other sizes that match the headlights. they have a crome slight blueish tint to them, they flash a color REAL close to the silverstar headlights.
APC and 3A racing make "titanium" bulbs that look crome, but flash red, yellow, hyperwhite, and blue.

I've done the rear turn signals and back up lamps with the silvervision lamps from http://www.autolumination.com/
Both the amber turn signals and the reverse lights are quite dim in comparison with the stock lamps. I got a couple of red 7443 LEDs that I am going to try with the tail lights/ brake lights and see how they look with this combination.
I have replacement amber 7440s for the front too but haven't had the time to mess with installing them yet. My 15 year old has small hands and that was a big help with the rear lamps. I'll probably employ him for the front lamps, too.
Another post on the forum identified the third brake light as being a 194 but it is a 7740.
I'm thinking about doing a mod to the third brake light with either a custom LED arrangement or some other LED third brake light stock part modified somehow. Not sure what yet about that. Autoilumination sells bare sockets so any modification would be an easy plug in. One other idea about th third brake light is to black out some of it so that when the brake is applied the RX-8 logo is displayed. I haven't read a thread on here about doing that, has anyone else?
Does anyhone know what the small light on the sides of the tail lights that are red when the lights are turned on are? Are they LEDs or tiny grain incadescent? My bet goes to LEDs because incadescent would eventually burn out and they would be a b**ch to change!
