Sunroof in the RX8

Sunroof in the RX8
Hello Fellow RX8 owners,
Just wondering on peoples thoughts on getting a sunroof fitted into a RX8.
I am a few weeks away from getting one put in by a Melbourne company called Prestige Sunroofs. The model of sunroof is the Stratos 300M, cost is $1595.00
Just wondering if anyone has fitted one or knows of anyone who has fitted one into their RX8. Please give me your thoughts on it.
Kind Regards,
MrRx8_R

I had one installed after I purchased the 8. Has the single push open/close with lighted buttons, and I preferred it over the stock version.
For the concept as a whole, adding weight to a vehicle at the highest point is about the worst place you can add weight, in respect to handling. If the luxury of a sunroof is more important than a die-hard dedication to performance, I completely agree with the idea. Many will disagree, though.

After the labor and everything is done its goingto endup costing you over 2000 for that sunroof. PersonallyI dont think thats worth the price. But if youdont care about spending the cash then the only real concern Id have is whetheror not it will leak since its an aftermarket roof

Well the finished product is the price that i was quoted in my earlier post. i have used the same people to install my last sunroom in my ex-200sx which i owned for 6 years. it never leaked and came with a 3 year warranty.
i guess after having a sunroof for 6 years then driving a car that doesnt have one, i kinda feel a little closteraphobic (however u spell it). i think it will be a go-er!!

The shape of the roof does pose some problems, but if you get one small enough you can have the sunroof fit in-between the concave parts of the roof.
I haven't had any leaks at all.
Dominion-- If you purchase the sunroof from the people installing it, it will probably be at a better price than buying one separately & finding someone to install it. Just look up a local style shop & see what they have to offer.

I think if I wanted a sunroof I would just have bought the GT. If you're paying that much for the aftermarket version, you may as well pay a bit more and get it stock...that's just my opinion of ocurse.

Landon Star,
Was the extra weight of the sunroof noticable to the handling of your car after you had it installed?
In Australia you cannot get the rx8 with a sunroof, it has to be aftermarket.
Iv booked myself to have it done it 2 weeks time, i drive pretty hard when i can and id like to know if there will be any sort of increase in the body roll, not that i can notice much as it is.
Thanks.

dude, i don't think i can be compare to the stock one, those aftermarket roof are ugly to me, it'll completely ruin you're beautiful roof line, you think those aftermarket roof have fine lines/cruve like the stock one??? i don't think so.....remember, your roof ain't flat like honda civics.

Sunroof is a sunroof. They all look the same after they're in. I'm sorry, but Mazda didn't take their stock sunroof into a windtunnel to design it, there's nothing that sets it WAY above an aftermarket roof. Except maybe leaking if an idiotic style shop installs it for you.
No, I couldn't notice any of the performance differences. My aftermarket roof is actually much lighter than the stock one...so, theoretically, is a BETTER performance sunroof.
I obviously didn't think of that before I put it in.
Oh well. Works for me.
Sorry about the late response, guys.

Also, the RX-8 sunroof does have quite a bit of aerodynamic considerations - it has a built in deflector that pops up when the roof is fully extended, which guides the wind over without causing cabin noise.

while we're on the topic of sunroofs. Can someone post a pic from inside the car with the sunroof open? I thought that I saw somewhere that the glass only slides a few inches back. I dont have an 8 (yet) so I cant try it for myself. I just thought that it would be weird if the glass didnt slide all the way back exposing the entire opening. Thanks.

Yeah, I'm well aware. Sizing was a serious issue, I had to get mine to fit in-between the curves. Still a decent sized roof, though.
P.S. It was a flat sunroof that I installed on my 8.

wind deflector
had factory add-on wind deflector installed via dealership when first bought the car. now thinking that was a mistake since it detracts from the "look" of the car overall.
can i have the thing removed without causing problems? don't know if installation required holes to be drilled or some such additional consideration.
thanks for your help.
