trunk lid, spoiler to no spoiler, need new lid now
i'll post pictures later, but i just took my stock spoiler off after 4+ years of it. once i lowered it, i really though i'd like the spoiler-less look better for some reason, and i do!! makes the back-end look lower and wider. anyway, the 6 holes are gnarly and rusted, and there are scrape marks all over the edge of where the spoiler was. i was expecting this after so long. i debadged my trunk a few years ago, so now instead of getting those holes filled, plus the new spoiler ones, and getting the scraped edges sanded and painted, i figure at this point it's just be WAY cheaper to just get a new oem trunk. i actually want a carbon fiber one, but don't have the coin for that.
anyway, can i even get an oem trunk without the holes? i mean, does mazda, or anyone else, even sell them without the holes already pre-drilled?? (i'm referring to the "mazda" badge and flying "m" part, i know the spoiler-less lids obviously don't have the holes on the top) but can i order a new, or even used trunk lid without the badges/holes?
ps i didn't see anything on some of the vendor sites listed. or it will show an oem trunk but it will have the badges on it, so i'm not sure if that will work.
thanks!

look in the FS section, you may find an OEM trunk. but shipping will probably be killer. Im pretty sure you can find a CF one on here too. From the looks of it the OE and CF trunks are almost the same price.
But be careful with carbon trunks, the fitment is caca on alot of them, i woundnt want water dripping into my trunk.

i glanced in there. i'll keep looking, but i really want a trunk lid that has no holes anywhere -- won't all oem lids have the "mazda" and "m" badges, and therefore holes? is there a vendor here that sells them without the badge holes??

Just did a trunk lid swap via the forums. Shipping was like $40 via FedEx ground. Remember though if going this rout the non-spoiler OEM lid is $700 BUT it is not painted add around $300 to the declared value.
Take care,

haha. thanks guys. razz, are u saying good luck to me in general or good luck to 05rex8's comment??
rex - not a bad idea, but i have a feeling that filling 5 holes on the back side, 6 holes on the top, and sanding out the scrapes/rust from the spoiler, and then repainting ... it'll just be easier to get a new lid. hell, i've always wanted to get a carbon fiber trunk, but i'm poor, so unfortunately that's not an option.
oh, i never posted pics ... give me a minute...

here are some pics. 2 w/ spoiler, 5 without. man, for some reason i never liked stock 8's w/o the spoiler, but once i saw someone w/ rims, lowered, exhaust w/o the spoiler, i fell in love. i love it now w/o the spoiler. i'm sure part of it is just 4+ years and read for a change, but i think it looks lower and wider w/o it. and i never noticed how pronounced the bend in the upper part of the trunk lid was til now.
anyway, if you're thinking of removing your stock spoiler, check out pics 4 and 5 before you do......that's 4+ years of stock spoiler, mostly garaged, and it's pretty scratched up.

2Tone - I had the same issue with the OEM spoiler leaving scratches, when replacing it with the Racing Beat spoiler. I think you have 4 options:
1) Have all the holes welded and scratches repaired. This will require a full repaint of the trunk. This is what I did. Range from $200-$1000, based on what I've seen on this board.
2) Live with the badges, and swap the trunk lid with someone who wants an OEM spoiler.
3) Get a carbon fiber lid.
4) Do nothing.

thanks kris. the quote to fill the holes was high, about the same to just buy a new trunk - but straight from mazda will have the badge holes still, so i have to go after market. i really can't decide if i want cf - i want the weight savings, but not necessarily the look of it.
anyone comment on their brand of after market trunk lid: fitment, price, etc? thanks!!

I've heard the VIS ones are decent...I don't have one so I can't confirm. Seibon usually makes good stuff too. You could always get a CF one and then have it painted too, if you don't like the CF look. If you don't mind me asking, how much was the quote to have the holes filled?

side question: why do all of the cf products brag abt the lower weight but none of them actually post the weight? isn't there a problem with some cf being not-as-good as others?? just curious what to watch out for.
the quote to fill all the holes (6 spoiler and 5 from the badges) and repaint was $500-700, but i "know" the guy. friend of a friend kinda thing. he said he called around to compare and got quotes of $1200 and up. keep in mind that is so high b/c its not just filling in the smaller badge holes, but also all 6 spoiler holes, which are bigger, and the spoiler left some scrapes. so anyway, for the amount of work for all that, 5-700 really doesn't sound bad, but i might as well get a brand new cf trunk for <800 and save weight too.
